Federal Judge Says EQT Misled Landowners

The Associated Press reports that a federal judge in Virginia ruled against a Pittsburgh based energy company for trying to cut separate deals with landowners who could potentially be part of a class action suit. Attorneys for the landowners say EQT cheated the residents out of hundreds of millions of dollars in royalties because of a dispute over mineral rights. EQT Production Company owns the natural gas mineral rights beneath more than 3.4 million acres in the Appalachian basin. The company drills for gas in the Marcellus Shale, as well as coalbed methane. The AP reports that EQT is appealing the decision.
