One of Idaho’s industries hardest hit by the recent housing boom and bust is forest products.

According to the U.S. Forest Service, the timber harvest from Idaho national forests dropped from 172 million board feet in 1999 to 121.2 million board feet in 2008.

The Idaho Division of Financial Management’s 2011 economic forecast reported there are about half as many mills in the inland region as there were 20 years ago.

Still, the report projects growth in the industry over the next few years…

“Idaho lumber and wood products employment hit a trough of 5,700 jobs in 2010 which was about 40 percent below its 2006 peak of 10,000 jobs. It’s projected to grow each year of the forecast, but it’s not fast enough to top the previous peak.”

The Division of Financial Management believes an increase in housing starts will help fuel a mild recovery in wood production.

An Emmett, Idaho sawmill funded by $4 million in federal stimulus money and additional capital from private backers stopped operations last week, closing its doors for the second time since 2010. The “Honest” Home, And What It Has To Do With Idaho Timber Exports

Our recent story on Japanese homebuilding preferences and how they’ve helped one North Idaho sawmill led me to a guy named Roger Williams.  He’s an architect based in Seattle, but he’s done a lot of work in Japan.  He’s made dozens of trips there over the years. I was trying to understand why there’s such […]

California, Like Idaho, Benefits From Timber Exports

Last week StateImpact told the story of Idaho Forest Group’s Laclede mill, which experienced its first shutdown in decades when the housing bubble burst, decimating lumber demand.  The mill reopened thanks in large part to the company’s new focus on the export market. The Wall Street Journal this week reports that the export market is […]

Why Exporting Lumber Takes More Than Just Shipping Containers

When the recession hit, it hit Idaho’s forest products industry hard.  For years, the U.S. housing market had been strong enough that lumber producers had little trouble finding buyers.  But by 2009, housing starts stood at a fraction of what they had been just four years earlier.  Anxious for sales, lumber producers looked to foreign […]

How Traditional Japanese Homebuilding Reversed The Fortunes Of One Idaho Sawmill

Before the recession hit, the sawmill in the North Idaho town of Laclede was known for its reliability.  It had never seen a shutdown, not in Steve Spletstoser’s nearly 30 years of working there.  Then came 2008. “It was really eye-opening to see,” Spletstoser says.  “Your livelihood is hanging in the balance.”  Day after day, […]

How Funding Rural Idaho Schools Became ‘Not Unlike a Barn-Raising’

Sitting on the ground in an overgrown forest outside of Council, Idaho, a couple of weeks ago, logger Mark Mahon strayed from the main subject of conversation.  He was talking about how logging companies like the one he owns with his parents and brother have fared in recent years, but he began talking about the […]

Was A Small Idaho Sawmill A Smart Way To Spend Stimulus Dollars?

It’s a rare thing for a small sawmill to try to get up and running while a crucial market driver for lumber — housing construction — remains in a national slump. So when the Emerald Forest Products mill reopened in Emmett, Idaho, this month, something unusual was happening.  “That’s a news story,” timber industry expert Todd […]
