Unemployment Benefits Scaled Back As Idaho’s Jobless Rate Drops

As many as 500 Idahoans will lose unemployment benefits this week, according to the state Department of Labor.  That termination of benefits was triggered when Idaho’s three-month average unemployment rate fell below 8 percent. The Idahoans losing benefits are those who have been in the program the longest, and who are in its final phase.  […]

Vocational Certificates Have More Value In Idaho Than In Other States

Two-year postsecondary certificates hold more economic value in Idaho than in most other states.  That’s according to a report released today that measures the value of vocational certificates.  But, at the same time, Idaho ranks among the bottom ten U.S. states when it comes to the number of people with two-year postsecondary certificates. The report […]

Idaho Recovers, Sort Of

By one measure, Idaho’s economy has regained the ground it lost in the recession. The state’s real gross state product (translation: the total value of all goods and services produced in Idaho, corrected for inflation) was greater in 2011 than it was in 2007.  That’s according to the Idaho Department of Labor.

Fair Pay Bill May Not Fare Well

The U.S. Senate is slated to vote on an equal pay bill today.  As The Boston Globe explains, the Paycheck Fairness Act would address the persistent wage gap between men and women by “requiring employers of companies with pay discrepancies to provide a reason for the gap.”  Moreover, it would “bar employers from retaliating against […]

Session Wrap: Democrat’s ‘IJOBS’ Fails, Again

Democrats in the Idaho Legislature again offered a slate of bills they said would boost economic growth and add jobs to the economy. They dubbed it ‘IJOBS’, and it’s not the first time they’ve attempted to get similar measures through.  Democrats introduced the first round of IJOBS bills back in 2010.  They all failed. This year, […]

Laid-Off INL Workers Will Get Help Through Federal Grant

The Idaho Department of Labor will receive a $1,045,000 federal grant to assist Idaho National Laboratory workers who lost their jobs late last year.  About 600 people were laid off by three INL contractors, according to Department of Labor spokesman Bob Fick.  The department estimates about 175 of those workers will seek help through its field offices. […]

Where We Work: Visualizing Jobs In The U.S. And Idaho

The good folks at NPR’s Planet Money created this neat visualization of how the jobs we work have shifted over time.  The clearest change is in manufacturing jobs.  In 1972, they accounted for nearly 24 percent of jobs in the U.S.  Now, just 9 percent of workers are employed in that sector.  The proportion of […]

In Boise, Women’s Wages Are Among Nation’s Worst

This truth still holds: women earn less than men.  Despite decades of improvement, women who work full-time and year-round earn about 77 percent as much as similarly employed men.  Where do women fare the worst?  Financial news and commentary site 24/7 Wall Street has compiled a ranking of the cities where women are paid the […]
