Schools Calendar: Florida Board Of Governors Heads To Orlando Next Week
Next week is a big deal for higher education in Florida. The State University System Board of Governors will hold its annual meeting in Orlando.
Over three days, the board will hear presentations about each public university’s work plan for the next three years — including their tuition requests.
The board will review applicants for openings on boards of trustees at Florida A&M University (1), New College of Florida (1), and the newly created Florida Polytechnic University (5).
Gov. Rick Scott will address the panel during an informal lunch on Tuesday in an ongoing effort to keep the peace between the Governor’s Office and the board. The two entities are trying to work together after questioning the other’s authority over the years in matters like tuition hikes and oversight of university business.
The governor will also be there to welcome the newest board member. Scott announced the appointment this week of Elizabeth Webster. She has a background in healthcare management. Her appointment is subject to confirmation by the Florida Senate, but she’ll be able to cast votes next week as part of the 17-member Board of Governors.
