Idaho gained nearly 12,000 between July 2011 and July 2012. That’s according to new data released today by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Idaho’s addition of 11,984 people is less than a percentage, .8, of growth over the last year. That ranks Idaho 24th among states.

This is in contrast to the growth Idaho experienced over the first half of the last decade. Idaho’s population grew by more than 20 percent from 2000 to 2010. That more than doubles the national growth rate over the same time period.

North Dakota saw the largest percentage growth from 2011 to 2012, climbing 2.17 percent. North Dakota’s population growth rate was also larger than the nation’s, which grew just .7 percent.

Here’s a look at the top 10 fastest growing states, in terms of percent increase:

  • North Dakota
  • District of Columbia
  • Texas
  • Wyoming
  • Utah
  • Nevada
  • Colorado
  • Arizona
  • Florida
  • South Dakota

The state with the largest population is still California with 38 million people. Texas is next with 26.1 million. Census reports two states lost population between 2011 and 2012 — Rhode Island and Vermont.
