Newsweek: Florida Boasts 115 Of The Nation’s Best Public High Schools
More than 100 Florida public high schools are among America’s best — including the second-best high school in the country — according to Newsweek.
The magazine ranks the country’s top 2,000 public high schools each year.
Newsweek says the winners are “those that have proven to be most effective in turning out college-ready grads.”
The ranking are based on school-submitted data for 2011-2012.
Florida has five schools ranked in the top 20:
- 2nd: International Baccalaureate School at Bartow High, Polk County
- 6th: School for Advanced Studies, Miami-Dade County
- 9th: Suncoast Community High School, Palm Beach County
- 10th: Stanton College Preparatory School, Duval County
- 17th: Pine View School, Sarasota County
The Florida Department of Education says the International Baccalaureate School at Bartow High had the highest percentage of students in the nation taking college-level course exams and certifications.
Rankings are based on these components:
- Graduation rate (25%)
- College acceptance rate (25%)
- Advanced placement (AP) or honors-level courses taken per student (25%)
- Average SAT/ACT scores (10%)
- Average AP (or equivalent) scores (10%)
- Percent of students enrolled in at least one AP (or equivalent) course (5%)
Most of the top 100 schools have graduation rates of at least 99 percent.
