Plan For New Indiana County Coal Mine Draws Attention

A proposed coal mine underneath Indiana County is drawing attention – the Associated Press reports about 150 people showed up at a public hearing to learn more about the project.

Derry Township-based AMFIRE said the mine would cover about 4,300 acres underground with 62 acres of surface area and provide many local jobs.
The company could request an extension of the mining-permit area in the future, said Rod Lawrence, senior mine engineer and project manager.
The Department of Environmental Protection, which is reviewing the company’s application, said that if a permit is issued, mining would begin in 2014 and continue for about 20 years.
