STEM is an acronym for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. And STEM fields are the professional and academic disciplines that fall under the STEM acronym.

The 2007-2012 Roadmap to Florida’s Future has identified the need to strengthen PreK-12 math and science education, and in 2009, the state created a Florida STEM Council to focus on STEM education in partnership with workforce, commerce and education groups.

The Anemic State of High School Physics in Florida

Physics is the most  fundamental of sciences; it’s an essential stepping stone for  careers in engineering or science. But around the country, fewer than 40 percent of high school students take a physics class. In Florida , that number is much lower — only about a quarter of high school students take physics. Experts say […]

Algebra Isn’t Enough: Make Precalculus A Bright Futures Requirement

While Florida’s Bright Futures scholarships no longer pay the entire tuition bill at the state’s public universities as they once did, they are still a valuable source of financial support for thousands of students. Recent increases in the minimum scores on SAT and ACT college entrance exams required for Bright Futures eligibility have sparked some […]

Opinion: Florida Universities Should Invest In More Hands-On Science Lessons

As a physics professor at one of Florida’s public universities, I am always looking for ways to encourage students and their parents to take on the challenge of majoring in science or engineering in college. A few weeks ago, I visited with parents of middle and high school students who attend a science-oriented school near […]

Everybody Loves STEM

Retired Cuban leader Fidel Castro broke a long silence yesterday, and we couldn’t resist pointing out this education-related gem. He mostly touched on the push to open U.S.-Cuba relations. But in a statement to the University Students Federation, Castro put in a plug for STEM education — science, technology, engineering and math. From the Miami […]

At first, the kids in the auditorium at Richmond Heights Middle School weren’t sure they’d hear a voice above the ear-burning static. Dade Radio Club of Miami president Miguel Garate kept signaling the space station. “NA1SS, NA1SS, this is Richmond Heights. Over,” Garate said repeatedly, trying to hail the space station. They had just minutes […]

Opinion: For Better Teachers, Larger Classes And Higher Salaries

Maybe a charter school in New York City has discovered “The Answer” to Florida’s K-12 education challenges? If so, the school has done so by setting aside Florida’s focus on keeping class sizes small and by instead adopting a strategy that our state has so far ignored – recruiting star teachers with high salaries and […]

Lawmaker Says Financial Aid Could Depend On Classes, Not Just Test Scores

A key Senate lawmaker may put less emphasis on test scores to determine which students qualify for state financial aid for college — possibly including Bright Futures. Instead, scholarships  and grants would depend more on taking tougher classes in high school. Senator John Legg, R-Trinity, said he and other lawmakers have heard complaints and concerns […]

FAU Students Building Robot Boat To Conquer The World

On the Intracoastal Waterway near Dania Beach, Ivan Bertaska was getting ready to captain his vessel. Bertaska wants to check the boat’s capabilities by having it speed up and slow down as it carves a wavy wake across the Intracoastal. “The wave pattern actually gives me a good range of velocities,” he said, “so at […]

Lots of people think teaching students computer programming is a good idea. But where coding fits in schools is a difficult question. Is it a science? A language? Career training? Florida lawmakers proposed, but did not approve, letting students substitute coding for foreign language or physical education courses required for a high school diploma. The […]
