Idaho lawmakers are in Boise this week ahead of the 2013 legislative session, which starts January 7.  Beginning this afternoon, there’s a new legislator orientation for the more than 30 percent of lawmakers who are newcomers.

Legislators meet behind closed doors Wednesday evening to determine leadership positions for the coming session. The contest for the top job in the House is closely watched, with current Speaker Lawerence Denney (R-Midvale) and Assistant Majority Leader Scott Bedke (R-Oakley) vying for the post.

House Republicans will caucus at Crane Creek, a Boise country club.  Senate Republicans will meet at the Owyhee Plaza Hotel.  House Democrats will meet at Smoky Mountain Pizzeria, and Senate Democrats will caucus at a private home.

Committee chairmanships and assignments will be determined during Thursday’s organizational session.  Some expect that task could extend into Friday, given the number of new lawmakers and vacant committee chairmanships.
