Millions of gallons of crude spilled into the water. Damage was done to aquatic life.<\/p>\n<p>But is the spilled oil now to blame for the deaths of hundreds of dolphins?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe magnitude and the duration of the deaths is utterly unprecedented in the Gulf of Mexico,\u201d said\u00a0Ryan Fikes, a scientist with the National Wildlife Federation. In a conference call, Fikes talked with reporters along with the group\u2019s David Muth. They released a report titled \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nwf.org\/~\/media\/PDFs\/water\/2015\/Gulf-Wildlife-In-the-Aftermath-of-the-Deepwater-Horizon-Disaster_Five-Years-and-Counting.pdf\">Five Years &amp; Counting<\/a>\u201d about the effects of the spill on wildlife.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is compelling evidence that this mortality event that has been going on since the spill is linked to the spill,\u201d said Muth, head of the group\u2019s<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nwf.org\/What-We-Do\/Protect-Habitat\/Gulf-Restoration\/Oil-Spill.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0Gulf Restoration Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But is BP\u2019s oil to blame?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bp.com\/content\/dam\/bp\/pdf\/gulf-of-mexico\/BP_Gulf_Five_Year_Report.pdf\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"166\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/tracks\/198460856&amp;color=ff5500&amp;auto_play=false&amp;hide_related=false&amp;show_comments=true&amp;show_user=true&amp;show_reposts=false\"><\/iframe>BP wrote in a report<\/a>\u00a0it released two weeks ago that the unusually high number of dolphin deaths began several months before the rig explosion and may be linked to a deadly strain of animal bacteria. In an emailed response from BP\u2019s media relations office, the company said the National Wildlife Federation was trying to use the spill to raise money for its \u201cpolicy agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Overall, BP says the parts of the Gulf affected by the spill are \u201cundergoing a strong recovery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Wildlife Federation calls that assessment a \u201cvery rose picture\u201d that is at odds with what it says are diminished populations of sea turtles, pelicans, and fish.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It was five years ago next month that a BP oil drilling rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, killing 11 workers.
