This is Your Lake on Drought."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The latest drought monitor from the National Drought Mitigation Center was released Thursday, and, while it showed much of Texas is <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/texas\/2011\/12\/29\/texas-inching-out-of-extreme-drought-for-now\/\">slowly inching its way out of extreme drought<\/a>, some other numbers give cause for concern.<\/p>\n<p>While rains have blessed much of the state this month, many lakes,\u00a0reservoirs\u00a0and aquifers are not refilling and <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.chron.com\/climateabyss\/2011\/12\/an-early-christmas-present-texas-rain\/\">show only modest signs of rising<\/a>. Case in point: Lake Buchanan, an important water source for Central Texas. It currently sits at 988 feet above sea level, some 23 feet below where it usually is in December. NASA says that the &#8220;distinct, tan \u201cbathtub ring\u201d&#8221; around the lake shows &#8220;exposed lake bed sentiments.&#8221; The edge of the lake is &#8220;currently as much as a mile from the stone walls that normally protect lakefront homes,&#8221; NASA says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Now here&#8217;s a look at the &#8220;before&#8221; photo, taken of the lake when it was at normal levels in October 2003. The town of Bluffton, for instance, was evacuated and flooded when Buchanan Dam and the resulting lake were completed in the late 1930s and early 1940s. Now the foundations of former buildings and businesses are exposed, as is the graveyard.
