The goal of each blaze is to remove brush, cedar, large plants and invasive species that can crowd the land and displace the native grasses.\u00a0The division\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.austintexas.gov\/rxfire\">oversees prescribed fires<\/a>\u00a0on between 2,500 and 5,000 acres of preserved land each year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf there\u2019s a woodland environment and it rains, about 30 to 40 percent of that water will be captured in the canopy of those trees,\u201d says Amanda Ross, spokeswoman for the Wildland Conservation Division. \u201cBut grasses will allow the water to come down to the ground and run off slowly into nearby creeks or percolate into the soil through the deep root systems of the grasses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The fires mimic naturally-occurring wildfires in order to maintain a grassland habitat, Ross says.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The Wildland Conservation Division manages about 26,000 acres <a href=\"http:\/\/www.austintexas.gov\/department\/wildland-maps\">of Water Quality Protection Lands<\/a> \u2013 city-owned preserves <a href=\"http:\/\/www.austintexas.gov\/department\/water-quality-protection-land\">first established in 1998<\/a> to maintain healthy recharge of Austin\u2019s groundwater through urban growth and development.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17386\"  class=\"wp-caption module image right\" style=\"max-width: 300px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/texas\/files\/2012\/08\/05_edwards.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-17386\" alt=\"Edwards Aquifer\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/texas\/files\/2012\/08\/05_edwards-300x200.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/texas\/files\/2012\/08\/05_edwards-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/texas\/files\/2012\/08\/05_edwards-620x413.jpg 620w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/texas\/files\/2012\/08\/05_edwards.jpg 864w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">http:\/\/pubs.usgs.gov<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\"> <\/p><\/div>\n<p>About 60,000 people rely on the Barton Springs segment of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edwardsaquifer.net\/index.html\">Edwards Aquifer<\/a> as their main or only source for drinking water, says Brian Smith, a scientist with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bseacd.org\/\">Barton Springs\/Edwards Aquifer Conservation District<\/a>. There are even <a href=\"http:\/\/www.austinchronicle.com\/news\/2013-11-15\/austins-water-prospectors\/\">several hundred wells in Austin<\/a>. But unlike surface reservoirs, the aquifer can\u2019t <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/texas\/2014\/06\/11\/as-highland-lakes-near-record-low-will-they-ever-fill-again\/\">fill up in a single heavy rain<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we\u2019re in very severe drought conditions and we get a rainy period with a lot of good storm flow in the creeks, it still takes several months for the aquifer to get back to non- drought conditions,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s not something that can just fill up overnight because only a small portion of water flowing in streams actually recharges the aquifer. In 1998, Austinites voted to issue $65 million in city bonds to acquire 15,000 acres of land, most of which was slated for development, and preserve it for the express purpose of protecting groundwater recharge zones to the south and west of the city. Since then, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.statesman.com\/news\/news\/local-govt-politics\/austin-voters-to-consider-water-quality-protection\/nSdd3\/\">city has continued to buy out land<\/a> in the recharge zones to protect water quality. Other cities, including Denver, Colorado, have followed Austin\u2019s example and taken steps to prevent development in groundwater recharge zones, says Ross.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/today.agrilife.org\/2014\/07\/10\/agrilife-research-study-identifies-contributing-factors-to-groundwater-table-declines\/\">recent study from Texas A&amp;M<\/a> found that statewide <a href=\"http:\/\/today.agrilife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/TX_WaterLevels_Figure-Copy.jpg\">groundwater levels have fallen<\/a>\u00a0substantially over the last 80 years, partly due to concrete ground covering in cities and neighborhoods, which prevents rainwater from reaching the aquifers.<\/p>\n<p>Most of Texas has <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/texas\/tag\/drought\/\">grappled with strained water supplies<\/a>\u00a0for several years. Even though the Barton Springs Edwards Aquifer Conservation District <a href=\"http:\/\/watrnews.com\/2013\/11\/barton-springsedwards-aquifer-conservation-district-declares-drought-aquifers-within-district\/#.U8WROBlnedU\">declared no drought conditions for the aquifer<\/a> last November, maintaining the supply of groundwater remains a serious concern.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very likely that at the next board meeting on the 24<sup>th<\/sup> of July our board of directors will meet to consider all the data and very likely we will be going back into drought status,&#8221; says Smith. &#8220;Water levels in the aquifer are going down because we\u2019re getting very little rain and we don\u2019t have very much water in the creeks while water continues to flow out of Barton Springs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Austin Water\u2019s Wildland Conservation Division, Monday\u2019s prescribed burn was also managed with the Austin Fire Department, The Texas A&amp;M Forest Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.<\/p>\n<h5><em>Dylan Baddour is a reporting intern with StateImpact Texas.\u00a0<\/em><\/h5>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fire and water may seem at odds with each other, but Austin\u2019s city-owned water utility is using prescribed burning\u00a0in an effort to help more rainfall make its way underground to the Edwards Aquifer.
