The camera is pointed southwest and the land in the upper right is Haiti.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Some Texans have been able to enjoy exceptional sunsets this week as billions of tiny grains of dust from afar traverses our skies.\u00a0A dusty drifter from 6,500 miles away &#8212;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nws.noaa.gov\/view\/prodsByState.php?state=PR&amp;prodtype=discussion\">a giant mass of super-fine sediment and dry air<\/a> from the Sahara Desert &#8212; is visiting Central Texas this week.<\/p>\n<p>Saharan dust blows <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dominicantoday.com\/dr\/local\/2014\/6\/16\/51816\/Saharadesertdust-adds-to-countrys-pollution-woes\">across the Caribbean<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/texas\/2012\/07\/30\/feel-dusty-in-here-texas-gets-a-visit-from-the-sahara\/\">passes through Texas<\/a> most summers, says meteorologist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aoml.noaa.gov\/hrd\/people\/jasonpdunion\/\">Jason Dunion<\/a> with the National Oceanic &amp; Atmospheric Administration. The dust is blown out of Africa in giant windstorms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat makes these things so incredible is how big they are. They\u2019re the size of the lower 48 states, so you\u2019re basically stirring up this continent-sized land mass and blasting it out into the Atlantic,\u201d says Dunion, who was the principle investigator in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aoml.noaa.gov\/hrd\/project2007\/sal.html\">Saharan Air Layer Group<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/F3Q8Sh2AjPo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The heavier dust falls to earth early in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=F3Q8Sh2AjPo\">weeklong trans-Atlantic voyage<\/a>, so the air mass above Texas carries only the finest dust, just a fraction of a human hair in diameter.<\/p>\n<p>Giant dust storms hit the Sahara every three to five days in the summer, but the dusty wind has been blowing farther West more frequently than usual this year, Dunion says. Texas got another whiff of the Sahara earlier this summer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is some hint that there\u2019s an ebb and flow, periods where you more dust storms pouring into the Atlantic versus a little bit less. The effect on climate we can\u2019t really answer because we\u2019ve been looking at it for such a short time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The drifting\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/http:\/\/earthobservatory.nasa.gov\/IOTD\/view.php?id=78825\">dust clouds<\/a>\u00a0have been studied since the early 1970s, but there wasn\u2019t a way to track them until about 10 years ago, according to Dunion.<\/p>\n<p>The super-dry air will suppress rainstorms and the fine dust can agitate asthmatics, though it isn\u2019t known to cause any lasting damage.\u00a0The Saharan dust should leave Central Texas today, but there\u2019s still a chance to see the exotic air before it goes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA great way to see the dust is the way it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nicepeoplenetworking.com\/2013\/sahara-dust-brings-spectacular-sunsets-to-dominican-territory\/\">reflects the sun<\/a>.
