{"id":34498,"date":"2014-02-14T09:24:48","date_gmt":"2014-02-14T15:24:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/texas\/?p=34498"},"modified":"2014-02-14T09:24:48","modified_gmt":"2014-02-14T15:24:48","slug":"dallas-mayor-says-drilling-company-suing-city-is-playing-a-game-of-poker","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/texas\/2014\/02\/14\/dallas-mayor-says-drilling-company-suing-city-is-playing-a-game-of-poker\/","title":{"rendered":"Dallas Mayor Says Drilling Company Suing City Is Playing A &#8220;Game Of Poker&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_34499\"  class=\"wp-caption module image right\" style=\"max-width: 300px;\"><a class=\"fancybox\" title=\"Citizens opposed to gas drilling in Dallas made their voices heard about Trinity East's plans during city meetings\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/texas\/files\/2014\/02\/Drilling_opponents_at_CPC.jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-34499\" alt=\"Citizens opposed to gas drilling in Dallas made their voices heard about Trinity East's plans during city meetings\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/texas\/files\/2014\/02\/Drilling_opponents_at_CPC-300x224.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/texas\/files\/2014\/02\/Drilling_opponents_at_CPC-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/texas\/files\/2014\/02\/Drilling_opponents_at_CPC-620x463.jpg 620w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/texas\/files\/2014\/02\/Drilling_opponents_at_CPC.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-media-credit\"> <\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Citizens opposed to gas drilling in Dallas made their voices heard about Trinity East&#39;s plans during city meetings<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings says a $30 million lawsuit filed Thursday by Trinity East Energy is the latest in a \u201cgame of poker.\u201d The gas drilling company is suing the city, claiming it breached a contract that would have allowed it to drill on city property.<\/p>\n<p>In 2008 Trinity East Energy paid the City of Dallas $19 million for the right to drill for natural gas on 3,600 acres in Northwest Dallas.<\/p>\n<p>The Fort Worth company filed three zoning applications to drill but the city plan commission and the city council rejected the sites because two were located in a park and floodplain and a third was near a new soccer complex.<\/p>\n<p>Trinity East\u2019s President Stephen Fort says city officials including Former City Manager Mary Suhm assured his company it would be able to drill, then they broke their promise.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI guess the simple analogy would be if the city sold some farm land to a farmer and then denied him a right to farm on it, that just wouldn\u2019t be right,\u201d Fort said in an interview with KERA.<\/p>\n<p>Fort says Trinity East spent several years and more than $30 million to design a drilling project it couldn\u2019t get off the ground.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are seeking to recover some of those lost monies,\u201d said Fort.\u00a0 \u201cBut we will never recover the amount of money we would have recovered if we were able to drill and develop the leases as we planned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thursday Mayor Mike Rawlings repeated his belief that Trinity East may actually have wanted the city to deny its permits. Natural gas prices are depressed and the company may hope it will make more money by suing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe they were not going to drill because of the business situation and that a game of poker was being played.\u00a0 And the only way they could win is if we folded our hand,\u201d Rawlings said.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement the city said Trinity East Energy chose not to apply for other permits on the leased property or use horizontal drilling.\u00a0 The city said it did what was necessary to protect public health and the environment and it will fight the lawsuit.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings says a $30 million lawsuit filed Thursday by Trinity East Energy is the latest in a \u201cgame of poker.\u201d The gas drilling company is suing the city, claiming it breached a contract that would have allowed it to drill on city property.
