The link between waste water disposal and earthquakes has been proven in other regions and the<a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/texas\/2014\/01\/03\/anger-greets-state-officials-in-quake-prone-texas-town\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0townspeople were disappointed\u00a0<\/a>when\u00a0Porter and others repeated Railroad Commission assertions that a link was something that remains unanswered by science.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/ci6.googleusercontent.com\/proxy\/vk4iaSRDggMuFQld2WKYqwvXWvKtvt5AO1LoX5321t3YJjly3aqo8E_3Xscy5TU4qhEVZl9BlAJXm8oCwetDpe1reQGSWQE4C8hN8RpB9gopl0UeP-J5RreRYsQoznUyToxjzdMlEcFYDc7i1TE=s0-d-e1-ft#https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/texas\/wp-includes\/js\/tinymce\/plugins\/wordpress\/img\/trans.gif\" border=\"0\" \/><!--more-->In his announcement today,\u00a0Porter did not move any closer to publicly acknowledging that disposal wells or injection wells can cause earthquakes. He said instead &#8220;the U.S.\u00a0Geological Survey, regulatory agencies,\u00a0as well as various academic institutions, are conducting research studies into the possibility of correlation between oil and gas activities and scientific activity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In fact, the USGS has already\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/blogs\/features\/usgs_top_story\/man-made-earthquakes\/\" target=\"_blank\">produced research showing the &#8220;correlation<\/a>&#8221;\u00a0 (and ways in which earthquakes can take place) as have academic institutions (including\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/smu.edu\/newsinfo\/pdf-files\/earthquake-study-10march2010.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">SMU<\/a>\u00a0and<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ig.utexas.edu\/people\/staff\/cliff\/publications.htm\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0the University of Texas<\/a>).
