Ovilla partially lies in both Dallas and Ellis counties, about 20 miles south of Dallas.<\/p>\n<p>The Ovilla earthquake\u2019s magnitude registered as a 2.4 on the Richter scale. Although the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/\">United States Geological Survey<\/a> (USGS) says that an earthquake with a magnitude of less than 3.5 isn\u2019t typically noticeable, at least three people <a href=\"http:\/\/earthquake.usgs.gov\/earthquakes\/eventpage\/usb000keq6#dyfi\">reported<\/a> feeling the quake to the USGS web site.<\/p>\n<p>Ovilla Fire Department Captain Brandon Kennedy said that he didn\u2019t feel the earthquake, nor did he receive any calls about it. According to Kennedy, it was the first earthquake he\u2019d even heard of in his hometown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve never known of [an earthquake] since I\u2019ve lived in Ovilla,\u201d Kennedy said.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>But Ovilla is on the eastern edge of the Barnett Shale, where oil and gas operators have been using <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/texas\/tag\/fracking\/\">hydraulic fracturing<\/a>, or \u201cfracking,\u201d since the late 1990s. Rather it&#8217;s the wastewater involved in drilling that is the likely culprit. His research shows that injecting wastewater from drilling into disposal wells can cause a fault to slip, resulting in an earthquake. The Texas Railroad Commission currently <a href=\"http:\/\/webapps2.rrc.state.tx.us\/EWA\/uicQueryAction.do;jsessionid=v5fDSfMSqrF6gMcqpJpXXTD1ySZZJVyW1MkLV6WplvLG8R1Bvbtm!-2054748846\">lists 29 disposal wells<\/a> in Ellis County.<\/p>\n<p>Although there has been a rash of these small quakes in the Barnett Shale over the past few years, the exact number couldn&#8217;t be verified because of the government shutdown.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Another minor earthquake close to the Barnett Shale rumbled through north Texas this week.
