A recent petition to the White House calling for Texas to secede\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/01\/16\/us\/politics\/texas-secession-movement-unbowed-by-white-house-rejection.html\">garnered more than 100,000 signatures<\/a>. The leading Republican candidate for Governor, state Attorney General Greg Abbott, has <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/texas\/2013\/07\/26\/texas-attorney-general-loses-round-in-ongoing-battle-vs-federal-government\/\">openly bragged<\/a> about how much he loves suing the Obama administration. So Texans who disdain the federal government may be feeling a bit of schadenfreude\u00a0today due to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/10\/02\/us\/politics\/us-government-shutdown.html?hp\">federal government shutdown<\/a>. But they could be missing out on some Texas treasures as a result.<\/p>\n<p>There are several federal outposts in Texas, in the form of National Parks, Forests and Monuments. And as of today you&#8217;ll find yourself out of luck if you want to collect pine cones in Davy Crockett National Forest\u00a0or Instagram a sunset at Big Bend National Park. All of them are closed because of the shutdown.<\/p>\n<p>Here are thirteen national parks and seven national forests and grasslands closed as of today, with a description of each from their respective National Park <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/shutdown\/index.html\">websites<\/a>:<!--more--><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/shutdown\/index.html\">Big Bend National Park<\/a>: &#8220;Because of the federal government shutdown, all national parks are closed and National Park Service webpages are not operating.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument:\u00a0&#8220;Because of the federal government shutdown, all national parks are closed and National Park Service webpages are not operating.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Amistad National Recreation Area: &#8220;Because of the federal government shutdown, all national parks are closed and National Park Service webpages are not operating.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>You get the idea. And the list goes on:\u00a0Big Thicket National Preserve;\u00a0Chamizal National Memorial;\u00a0Fort Davis National Historic Site;\u00a0Guadalupe Mountains National Park;\u00a0Lake Meredith National Recreation Area;\u00a0Lyndon B Johnson National Historical Park;\u00a0Padre Island National Seashore;\u00a0Palo Alto Battlefield National Historic Site;\u00a0Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River; and San Antonio Missions National Historical Park are all closed during the shutdown.<\/p>\n<p>Then there are the National Forests and Grasslands: Angelina National Forest; Davy Crockett National Forest;\u00a0Sabine National Forest; Sam Houston National Forest;\u00a0Caddo and Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ) National Grasslands; Black Kettle and McClellan Creek Grasslands; Kiowa and Rita Blanca National Grasslands. Go to their websites and you&#8221;ll find this:\u00a0&#8220;Due to the lapse in federal government funding, the U.S. Forest Service, as with other federal agencies, is closed with the exception of certain essential services.\u00a0 However, we will attempt to make timely updates about public health and safety on these web pages as appropriate. We sincerely regret this inconvenience.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re still hankering for the outdoors, don&#8217;t worry: there are plenty of Texas state parks still open, though they, too, <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/texas\/2013\/08\/09\/at-50-years-old-texas-parks-prepare-for-a-future-of-climate-change\/\">faces budget problems<\/a> of their own.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Texas isn&#8217;t known for having a warm relationship with the federal government.
