Wildfires, drought, and record heat don&#8217;t seem to have stopped folks from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.governing.com\/blogs\/by-the-numbers\/census-data-shows-where-Americans-are-moving.html\">moving to the state,<\/a> but you&#8217;d have to forgive them if they arrived in August and turned right around.<\/p>\n<p>But the historical record offers some context. First, this year has been, without a doubt, <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/texas\/2011\/12\/07\/the-year-in-texas-weather-yes-it-was-awful\/\">the worst<\/a>. So it could be that there&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.chron.com\/climateabyss\/2011\/12\/watching-those-records-fall\/\">nowhere to go but up<\/a> (we won&#8217;t know <a href=\"http:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/texas-environmental-news\/water-supply\/texas-drought-continue-through-spring-experts-warn\/\">until next spring<\/a>, though). But what&#8217;s also clear is that huge variations in rainfall isn&#8217;t anything new. Some years are really hot, others are cold.
