Corbett Ally Takes Over DEP's Southwestern Office

The Corbett Administration has put one of its own in charge of the Department of Environmental Protection’s southwestern office. Regional director George Jugovic has been asked to step down. He’ll be replaced by Susan Malone, who previously worked in the Office of the Attorney General. Corbett’s spokesman, Kevin Harley, told the Post-Gazette the reason behind the change was simple: Jugovic “was a Rendell appointee, and we will be replacing him with a Corbett appointee.”

HARRISBURG — As part of what advisers to Gov. Tom Corbett describe as an ongoing transition from the Rendell administration, a new director will be taking over in the Department of Environmental Protection’s southwestern office.
Regional director George Jugovic Jr. was asked by the governor’s office on Friday to resign from his position. He was appointed to lead the Pittsburgh-based office in November 2009 by then-DEP Secretary John Hanger.
Susan Malone, who serves as chief deputy attorney general for the office’s western region, will take over for Mr. Jugovic within a week, said Corbett spokesman Kevin Harley.
The personnel change comes as other organizational changes are expected to be occurring within the environmental protection agency. The Bureau of Oil and Gas Management, which oversees the state’s Marcellus Shale gas drilling activity, is anticipated to be shuffled with the agency, and its field staffers will no longer report to regional directors.
