David Thompson, safety officer for the Slaughterville Fire Department. &#8220;And it&#8217;s wearing us down.&#8221;<\/p><p><!--more--><\/p><p>Men and women from Slaughterville&#8217;s department teamed up with other nearby departments \u2014 including teams from Little Axe and Cedar Country \u2014 to battle a &#8220;firestorm&#8221; that erupted Friday, Aug. 3. Fires ravaged more than 8,900 acres in Cleveland County and destroyed 141 homes.<\/p><p>Statewide, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ok.gov\/OEM\/Emergencies_&_Disasters\/2012\/Wildfire_Event_20120730\/20120210_-_Wildfire_Situation_Update_9.html\">wildfires have destroyed<\/a> 603 homes and torched 110,000 acres since late July, state emergency management officials say. <a href=\"http:\/\/newsok.com\/oklahoma-investigators-seek-tips-about-arsonists-who-set-wildfires-in-luther-cleveland-county\/article\/3701850\">Arson is suspected<\/a> in most of those blazes, and officials estimate that 85 percent of the nearly 680 homes damaged in the last month were uninsured.<\/p><p>Volunteer firefighters are the frontline defense for much of Oklahoma, where the most devastating blazes often rage in rural parts of the state.<\/p><p>When fires erupt, they leave their jobs and families and head into the Oklahoma country.\u00a0These volunteers are unpaid and receive training on their own time. And while\u00a0they can qualify for income <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coft-oklahoma.org\/tax-credit-program\/\">tax credits<\/a> and small pensions, most of these firefighters say they just want to help their neighbors.<\/p><p>&#8220;That&#8217;s the hardest part,&#8221; says Jimmy Blair, assistant chief of the Slaughterville Fire Department. &#8220;Losing the house.
