But shareholders likely don\u2019t realize how intertwined the finances of the publicly traded company and its CEO actually are, a new Reuters investigation <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2012\/06\/07\/us-chesapeake-mcclendon-profile-idUSBRE8560IB20120607\">reveals<\/a>.<\/p><p>The enmeshment is so deep, the <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/2012\/05\/29\/chesapeake-energy-everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-worlds-biggest-fracker\/\">Oklahoma City company<\/a> has set up a unit \u2014 AKM Operations \u2014 in an annex office to help McClendon with his personal projects.<\/p><p>The personal business unit, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=newssearch&cd=5&ved=0CDcQqQIwBA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bloomberg.com%2Fnews%2F2012-05-09%2Fchesapeake-sued-over-claims-on-executives-jet-use.html&ei=o9LQT-OwFoKW2gXb07nCDA&usg=AFQjCNFlK5tKEpeefLvVhDtXa3rszrqPbg&sig2=J7gvW8aPLHR_Xu_RpRqCew\">executive jet<\/a> flights and the Oklahoma City Thunder are all part of McClendon\u2019s \u201clavish\u201d lifestyle, Reuters reports.<\/p><p>And, according to the news service&#8217;s investigation, a lot of that lifestyle is leveraged.<\/p><p><!--more--><\/p><p>McClendon\u2019s contract affords him the use of Chesapeake facilities for personal businesses and investment activities. He\u2019s required to reimburse the company for employees who primarily work on his personal business, but he doesn\u2019t have to pay for secretarial and administrative support.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>But the scope and sophistication of the support, including AKM Operations, is not broken out in public disclosures, John Shiffman, Anna Driver and Brian Grow with Reuters report.<\/p><\/blockquote><p>A Chesapeake accountant, for example, helped McClendon put a ranch up for auction. The boathouse has helped transform the river into an Olympic-class rowing venue.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h4>Passion Projects<\/h4><p>Finding out where Chesapeake\u2019s finances end and McClendon\u2019s begin is difficult, Reuters reports, and the company spends millions on projects that McClendon is personally passionate about.<\/p><p>McClendon co-owns the Deep Fork restaurant, which earns hundreds of thousands of dollars catering Chesapeake events. Another restaurant he has a stake in, Metro Wine Bar & Bistro, operates out of a building owned by a Chesapeake subsidiary, the news service reports.<\/p><p>McClendon also owns a 19 percent stake of the Oklahoma City Thunder, which has a $36 million sponsorship deal with Chesapeake.<\/p><p>And much of what McClendon owns is mortgaged \u2014 including part of his Thunder stake, Reuters reports.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>What hasn&#8217;t been previously disclosed is that McClendon mortgaged his future proceeds from the team to secure two bank loans.<\/p><p>&#8230; twice, McClendon has pledged his share of future proceeds from the Thunder as collateral for loans, from Bank of America in 2009 and Wells Fargo in 2010, according to records reviewed by Reuters. Neither loan has been previously disclosed.<\/p><p>Further particulars of the Thunder loans &#8212; the amount McClendon borrowed, whether they have been repaid or whether the NBA or his Thunder partners were notified &#8212; could not be determined.<\/p><\/blockquote><p>Other McClendon passions parallel company spending, Reuters reports:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>McClendon loves rowing \u2014 Chesapeake added 10 Olympic-hopeful rowers (who are modestly paid and are assigned various corporate\u00a0responsibilities) to the payroll and spent $10 million for two buildings along the Oklahoma River, helping transform it into an Olympic-class rowing venue.<\/li>\n<li>McClendon is passionate about religion, history and fitness \u2014 Chesapeake employs three corporate chaplains, a company historian and a former World&#8217;s Strongest Man winner who helps promote fitness.<\/li>\n<\/ul><p>In many ways McClendon still runs the company like he did when he co-founded it, Reuters reports. The company started with 10 employees in 1989, but Chesapeake is now a Fortune 500 company with more than 13,000 employees.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It has grown so big and McClendon has sold so much stock &#8212; dumping $569 million during a personal financial crisis in 2008 &#8212; that he now owns less than 1 percent of the company.<\/p><\/blockquote><p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The line between Chesapeake Energy and Aubrey McClendon is blurry.
