{"id":6100,"date":"2012-04-24T10:48:11","date_gmt":"2012-04-24T15:48:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/?p=6100"},"modified":"2012-04-24T10:48:11","modified_gmt":"2012-04-24T15:48:11","slug":"aa-in-bankruptcy-court-airline-wants-to-cut-contracts-unions-want-a-merger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/2012\/04\/24\/aa-in-bankruptcy-court-airline-wants-to-cut-contracts-unions-want-a-merger\/","title":{"rendered":"AA in Bankruptcy Court: Airline Wants to Cut Contracts, Unions Want a Merger"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>American Airlines and its labor unions squared off Monday in federal bankruptcy court.<\/p><p>The airline\u2019s lawyers argued cutting labor costs was necessary to remain competitive, while union lawyers suggested a merger with US Airways.<\/p><p>American is asking its three unions to give up about $990 million a year in wages and benefits, the Tulsa World <a href=\"reports\">reports<\/a>.<\/p><p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The company says it is saddled with higher labor costs than competitors and must eliminate 13,000 union jobs, freeze or terminate pension plans, curb health benefits, and change work rules, the Associated Press <a href=\"http:\/\/newsok.com\/american-airlines-makes-its-case-against-union-contracts-in-bankruptcy-court\/article\/3669072\/?page=2\">reports<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote><p>American can\u2019t make the cuts without union approval unless the bankruptcy court lets it throw out the union contracts.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The complexity of the case was underscored over the weekend when the Transport Workers Union, representing 26,000 American Airlines mechanics, filed a motion to exclude the committee of unsecured creditors from the trial on AMR&#8217;s motion to reject the collective bargaining agreements, writes the World\u2019s D.R. Stewart.<\/p><\/blockquote><p>Last week, US Airways <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/2012\/04\/23\/merger-with-us-airways-might-be-a-challenge-could-save-some-aa-jobs\/\">made deals<\/a> with American Airlines to win support for a merger. The unions said those agreements were better than what American is proposing in its bankruptcy restructuring.<\/p><p>American\u2019s executives would prefer to keep the airline independent.
