That\u2019s good news for an upcoming fiscal year with an estimated $100 million hole.<\/p><p>But energy industry estimates were too generous.<\/p><p>Natural gas prices <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/2012\/02\/03\/how-low-natural-gas-prices-could-slow-oks-growth\/\">are down<\/a>, and anticipated revenues from gross production taxes have been cut by almost $87 million.<\/p><p>And the expected cost of some <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/2011\/12\/27\/the-definitive-tax-credit-task-force-archive\/\">tax breaks<\/a> to the oil and gas industry has doubled, costing the state about $48 million.<\/p><p><!--more--><\/p><p>The Oklahoman\u2019s Michael McNutt <a href=\"http:\/\/newsok.com\/revised-estimate-of-oklahoma-tax-revenue-shows-rise-in-economy\/article\/3649639\/?page=1\">reports<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe&#8217;re an <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/topic\/energy-industry\/\">energy state<\/a>,\u201d Reece Womack, the Tax Commission&#8217;s economist who prepared the estimate, told commissioners. \u201cThat makes our revenue stream volatile because energy is volatile.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4>The Breaks<\/h4><p>The tax breaks are on oil and gas production taxes for horizontal and deep-well drilling, <a href=\"http:\/\/newsok.com\/okla.-oil-and-gas-tax-breaks-double-estimate\/article\/feed\/349109\/?page=1\">reports<\/a> Sean Murphy with the Associated Press:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230; Oklahoma must repay developers $294 million over the next three years, not $150 million as initially projected. Oklahoma temporarily suspended tax breaks amid a fiscal crisis in 2010 and promised to repay them beginning this year.<\/p><\/blockquote><p>State Senate President Pro Tem Brian Bingman, R-Sapulpa, told the AP such incentives attract oil and gas companies, which generate economic development and other revenues.<\/p><p>Sen. Tom Adelson, D-Tulsa, said the tax breaks are giveaways to wealthy companies:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;You&#8217;re basically taking away services from working class families and giving it to people who already have extraordinary wealth,\u201d he told the AP. \u201cI think it&#8217;s really an embarrassment.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4><em><\/em>Gas Money<\/h4><p>In December, it was estimated that natural gas would bring in about $267 million, which was based on projected average of $4 per 1,000 cubic feet.<\/p><p>February\u2019s estimate is based on $3.64 per MCF, which is a cut of about $86.9 million, reports <em>The Oklahoman<\/em>.<\/p><p>The Board of Equalization meets Tuesday to decide whether to approve the Tax Commission\u2019s revenue certification, which is the final determination of how much money is available to lawmakers for appropriation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Income tax and sales tax collections are up, and lawmakers will have about $43 million more to appropriate this year.
