Texas makes up the difference with \u201csubstantial\u201d property taxes; Nevada and Florida rely on sales taxes from tourism, the AP reports.<\/p><p>Alaska \u2014 the <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/2011\/11\/07\/how-alaska-abolished-its-individual-income-tax\/\">most recent<\/a> state to eliminate its income tax \u2014 did so in 1980 only after windfall revenues from the then-recently opened Trans-Alaska Pipeline System.<\/p><p>Oklahoma lawmakers hope that <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/2012\/01\/27\/state-tax-credits-formally-taken-to-task\/\">eliminating business tax breaks<\/a> and incentives will help offset revenue lost in reducing the personal income tax, which provides about one-third of revenues for state spending.<\/p><p>Cutting the tax credits alone falls \u201cwoefully short\u201d of offsetting the income tax revenue in Oklahoma, and lawmakers are looking at other credits and exemptions for elimination:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2026 the<a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/2012\/01\/02\/nixing-popular-exemption-is-just-one-of-47-ways-to-reduce-ok-income-tax\/\"> personal exemption<\/a> for every household member, including children, as well as the child tax credit and earned income tax credit, the AP reports.<\/p><\/blockquote><p>But proponents of reducing\/eliminating the income tax in Oklahoma say it will encourage economic growth and help it compete with no-income tax Texas and, potentially, no-income tax Kansas and Missouri.<\/p><p>From the AP:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Although the personal income tax does not apply to corporate earnings, supporters say company executives and employees will prefer to live in a state that doesn&#8217;t tax personal income.<\/p><p>Conservatives say the lost revenue will be made up by increased economic activity \u2014 more businesses paying corporate taxes and more employees paying property taxes and spending money.
