Thompson said she learned just the day before that teachers don&#8217;t get maternity leave.<\/p>\n<\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 14 proposals focus on a variety of areas: attracting and retaining teachers, school safety, school funding, charter school reform and bolstering learning opportunities for students.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notably absent from the priorities list is any mention of school vouchers \u2014 an issue <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oklahomawatch.org\/2022\/05\/19\/billionaire-philanthropists-pushing-charter-schools-and-school-vouchers-also-fund-oklahomas-secretary-of-educations-six-figure-salary\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">persistently championed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Secretary of Education and newly elected State Superintendent Ryan Walters, as well as Governor Kevin Stitt. Last session\u2019s voucher bill was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kosu.org\/education\/2022-03-25\/oklahomas-massive-school-voucher-bill-is-dead-but-the-ideas-behind-it-are-unlikely-to-go-away\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">narrowly defeated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pugh said the priority list was crafted after he spent the summer in conversations with stakeholders.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI met with over 200 public school superintendents. I met with every college president in the state of Oklahoma. I met with hundreds, if not thousands, of teachers and parents and advocacy groups,\u201d Pugh said. \u201cAnd the goal there was just to listen and take notes and hear their concerns, and find areas where we can work together to advance education and outcomes for our kids and for the state of Oklahoma.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><b>Teacher incentives<\/b><\/p><p><a href=\"http:\/\/webserver1.lsb.state.ok.us\/cf_pdf\/2023-24%20INT\/SB\/SB529%20INT.PDF\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SB529<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: would create a scholarship program similar to the state\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.okhighered.org\/otc\/inspired-to-teach.shtml\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inspired to Teach<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> program, but this program (dubbed Oklahoma Teacher Corps) would provide full scholarships \u2014 as opposed to Inspired to Teach\u2019s cap of $25,500 \u2014 and would require teachers to work at least four years in an Oklahoma Title I school.<\/span><\/p><p><a href=\"http:\/\/webserver1.lsb.state.ok.us\/cf_pdf\/2023-24%20INT\/SB\/SB522%20INT.PDF\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SB522<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: would change the state\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oklahoma.gov\/careertech\/educators\/professional-development\/teaching-to-lead\/teacher-induction.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teacher mentoring program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so that any teacher, regardless of how long they\u2019ve been certified, would be eligible to be a mentor to teachers during their first year. The existing $500-per-year stipend for mentoring would not be affected. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/webserver1.lsb.state.ok.us\/cf_pdf\/2023-24%20INT\/SB\/SB48%20INT.PDF\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This differs from a similar bill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that would pay $2,000 per year to highly qualified master teachers to mentor new teachers for their first three years in the classroom.<\/span><\/p><p><a href=\"http:\/\/webserver1.lsb.state.ok.us\/cf_pdf\/2023-24%20INT\/SB\/SB361%20INT.PDF\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SB361<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: would create a coalition of member states that recognize certification reciprocity by out-of-state teachers.<\/span><\/p><p><a href=\"http:\/\/webserver1.lsb.state.ok.us\/cf_pdf\/2023-24%20INT\/SB\/SB364%20INT.PDF\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SB364<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: would mandate 12 weeks of paid maternity leave for public school teachers who have worked at least one year at their district.<\/span><\/p><p><a href=\"http:\/\/webserver1.lsb.state.ok.us\/cf_pdf\/2023-24%20INT\/SB\/SB482%20INT.PDF\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SB482<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: would change the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sde.ok.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/files\/22-23%20State%20Minimum%20Salary%20Schedule.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">current minimum teacher salary schedule<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to start at $39,601, which adds $3,000 to the current minimum. $4,000 more for 5-9 years of teaching, $5,000 more for 10-14 years of teaching and $6,000 for at least 15 years of teaching.<\/span><\/p><p><a href=\"http:\/\/webserver1.lsb.state.ok.us\/cf_pdf\/2023-24%20INT\/SB\/SB525%20INT.PDF\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SB525<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: would reimburse teachers who obtained an additional teaching certification at the request of their district for the cost of the certification exam.<\/span><\/p><p><b>For schools and students<\/b><\/p><p><a href=\"http:\/\/webserver1.lsb.state.ok.us\/cf_pdf\/2023-24%20INT\/SB\/SB523%20INT.PDF\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SB523<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: would add $50 million to the Oklahoma School Security Grant Program. Public or private schools would be able to use the funds for salaries of school security officers, conducting threat assessments and implementing modifications, updating security technology and building security and developing emergency response plans with local law enforcement and emergency medical providers.<\/span><\/p><p><a href=\"http:\/\/webserver1.lsb.state.ok.us\/cf_pdf\/2023-24%20INT\/SB\/SB531%20INT.PDF\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SB531<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: would remove the attendance metric from the state\u2019s A-F report card and replace it with \u201cclimate surveys\u201d administered to students, staff, and parents and guardians of students. Districts could also be rewarded for reporting progress in certain metrics with $500 or $1,500 per graduate, depending on the economic status of the graduate.<\/span><\/p><p><a href=\"http:\/\/webserver1.lsb.state.ok.us\/cf_pdf\/2023-24%20INT\/SB\/SB527%20INT.PDF\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SB527<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: would increase the funding weights for several areas, including special education and gifted\/talented students.<\/span><\/p><p><a href=\"http:\/\/webserver1.lsb.state.ok.us\/cf_pdf\/2023-24%20INT\/SB\/SB528%20INT.PDF\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SB528<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: the \u201cLearn Everywhere Act\u201d would allow students at public schools to be eligible for \u201cextended learning opportunities\u201d outside of the classroom, such as apprenticeships, enrichment opportunities and mentorships. Students may request credit for the opportunity. It would also allow students to request credit for testing out of or demonstrating knowledge of a certain subject area.<\/span><\/p><p><a href=\"http:\/\/webserver1.lsb.state.ok.us\/cf_pdf\/2023-24%20INT\/SB\/SB359%20INT.PDF\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SB359<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: would add $60 million to the funding formula for education by moving ad valorem dollars to account for previous year actuals and not projected amounts. This comes on the heels of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/2022\/04\/14\/how-property-tax-protests-are-hurting-oklahoma-schools\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ad valorem protests last year that left rural schools in a lurch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><a href=\"http:\/\/webserver1.lsb.state.ok.us\/cf_pdf\/2023-24%20INT\/SB\/SB520%20INT.PDF\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SB520<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: would create three tracks to graduate and increase STEM graduation requirements.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the college prep path:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four (up from three) units of math<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four (up from three) units of lab science and two (up from one) of physical science<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four units of English<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three units of history\/citizenship<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two units of language or computer technology<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One additional unit of any of the above, concurrent courses, AP courses or International Baccalaureate courses.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One unit of fine arts<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the work ready path:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four units of English<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three units of math<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three units of lab science and one unit of physical science<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three units of history\/citizenship<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two units of language or computer technology<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One additional unit of any of the above, concurrent courses, AP courses or International Baccalaureate courses.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One unit of fine arts<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the core curriculum path:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four units of English<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three units of math, which include computer science or completion of a one-year, full-time, three-hour career and tech program leading to an industry credential.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three units of science<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three units of social studies<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One unit of the arts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One unit of language or computer education<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><p><a href=\"http:\/\/webserver1.lsb.state.ok.us\/cf_pdf\/2023-24%20INT\/SB\/SB516%20INT.PDF\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SB516<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: would dissolve the Virtual Charter School Board and create a Statewide Charter School Board that would regulate all charter schools.
