Gibbs College of Architecture have created a redesign of the Oklahoma County Jail to shift focus from punishment to rehabilitation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Senior architecture student J.D. Zogg led the 17-student redesign project, named \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reconstructing-incarceration-exhibition.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reconstructing Incarceration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d to address the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kfor.com\/news\/local\/oklahoma-legislators-looking-into-problems-at-oklahoma-county-jail\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serious overcrowding and design problems<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the Oklahoma County Jail. The team\u2019s redesign makes the jail 48.5% more energy efficient and would save 5 million pounds of carbon dioxide through the use of clean energy and solar panels. The new plan is also structured to promote better mental health outcomes for inmates.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[The redesign has] definitely a lot of coordination with the exterior spaces. A lot of glass and a lot of light, also accessible exterior space,\u201d Zogg said. \u201cSo as much greenery as possible, as much open space as possible and as much light as possible.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The student team presented their proposed design to the State Department in Washington D.C. in November, where Zogg said they received good feedback. A few weeks after that, the team presented the project again in the form of an art exhibition at the MAINSITE Contemporary Art Gallery in Norman.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OU architecture professor Marjorie Callahan led the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ou.edu\/dreamcourse\/past-courses\/fall-2020\/re-imagining-a-jail-for-oklahoma-city\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OU Dream Course<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that began the project last fall. She said she\u2019s been working with the Oklahoma County Jail Trust, a committee that evaluates jail conditions. Recently, the trust and the Oklahoma County Commissioners <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nondoc.com\/2021\/12\/06\/oklahoma-county-commissioners-accept-new-jail-plan\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">voted unanimously to build a new jail<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and while Callahan doesn\u2019t know if the students\u2019 design will have an impact, she hopes it will.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey have selected the architect Frankfort Short Bruza [for the new jail], and some of the members of Frankfort Short Bruza were at the exhibit,\u201d Callahan said. \u201cDo we know if we will influence them? We hope so. But it\u2019s pretty early on, they\u2019re currently trying to obtain all the funding to make this really go into fruition.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Callahan said she was proud of how professional the student design team has been throughout the process, and that Zogg\u2019s leadership role was instrumental in its success.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis was not your typical studio project,\u201d Callahan said. \u201cWe usually do beautiful aesthetic skyscrapers or housing projects.
