{"id":33596,"date":"2020-12-08T11:10:43","date_gmt":"2020-12-08T17:10:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/?p=33596"},"modified":"2020-12-08T11:10:43","modified_gmt":"2020-12-08T17:10:43","slug":"new-quarantine-guidelines-should-cut-time-students-spend-outside-oklahoma-classrooms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/2020\/12\/08\/new-quarantine-guidelines-should-cut-time-students-spend-outside-oklahoma-classrooms\/","title":{"rendered":"New quarantine guidelines should cut time students spend outside Oklahoma classrooms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a state where more than 90% of school districts are participating in in-person instruction, quarantines have limited students\u2019 actual time in a classroom.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That time away could be cut in half, though, thanks to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sde.ok.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/files\/CORONAVIRUS%20COVID-19%20QUARANTINE%20FAQs%20FOR%20OKLAHOMA%20PUBLIC%20SCHOOLS.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new guidelines <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from the CDC and Oklahoma\u2019s Departments of Health and Education.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new CDC\u00a0 guidelines still suggest quarantining for 14 days. But they also say that if a person exposed to COVID-19 receives a negative test and doesn\u2019t show symptoms they only need to stay home for seven days. If they don\u2019t get tested and remain asymptomatic, they should stay home for 10 days.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The move has been applauded by superintendents across Oklahoma. Jenks Public Schools, for example, has almost 400 students out because of potential exposure to the coronavirus. Getting those students back in the classroom is a good thing, superintendent Stacey Butterfield said Monday at Jenks\u2019 school board meeting.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s nice to see&#8230; the CDC looking at how this has evolved and modifying these quarantine protocols to reflect the knowledge that we\u2019ve gained throughout this virus,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Districts are having a tough time dealing with quarantines.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Woodward Public Schools, which later rescinded its quarantine policy and will adopt the CDC guidelines, had at one point decided to not quarantine students if those exposed and an infected person were all wearing masks. That<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/2020\/11\/20\/oklahoma-schools-are-starting-to-defy-cdc-quarantine-rules\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> type of policy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been happening across the state, but mostly unofficially.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">State officials <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.readfrontier.org\/stories\/state-tells-school-district-it-is-violating-quarantine-guidelines\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">warned districts last month<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that it wasn\u2019t a good idea to not follow CDC guidelines.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, Mustang Public Schools has announced a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/2020\/12\/03\/oklahoma-leaders-tout-mustang-quarantine-experiment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that will allow students to be in school while they quarantine after a COVID-19 exposure.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mustang officials have not answered StateImpact\u2019s questions about how many students are participating in that program, though as many as 20 could take part.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the pandemic raging, now is not the time to get creative with quarantining, former state epidemiologist Aaron Wendelboe <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/12\/07\/943768944\/critics-pan-school-experiment-to-corral-students-exposed-to-covid-19\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">told StateImpact<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs far as what we need to be doing at this time, I would just adhere to the more strict quarantine measures of, if you&#8217;ve been exposed, stay home\u2026 minimize those opportunities for transmission so that we can bend the curve again,\u201d Wendelboe said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a state where more than 90% of school districts are participating in in-person instruction, quarantines have limited students\u2019 actual time in a classroom.That time away could be cut in half, though, thanks to new guidelines from the CDC and Oklahoma\u2019s Departments of Health and Education.The new CDC\u00a0 guidelines still suggest quarantining for 14 days.
