{"id":33592,"date":"2020-12-04T14:48:20","date_gmt":"2020-12-04T20:48:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/?p=33592"},"modified":"2020-12-04T16:45:06","modified_gmt":"2020-12-04T22:45:06","slug":"governor-stitt-replaces-state-education-board-member-with-enid-mask-opponent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/2020\/12\/04\/governor-stitt-replaces-state-education-board-member-with-enid-mask-opponent\/","title":{"rendered":"Governor Stitt replaces state education board member with Enid mask opponent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Governor Kevin Stitt quietly removed and replaced State Board of Education member Kurt Bollenback of Kingfisher and replaced him with an anti-mask activist from Enid this week.<\/span><\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sos.ok.gov\/documents\/filelog\/93841.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Melissa Crabtree<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been an outspoken critic of masking in Enid. Bollenbach was one of three board members to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/2020\/07\/23\/oklahoma-state-board-of-education-punts-on-mask-mandate-for-schools\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vote in favor of a mask mandate in Oklahoma schools<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stitt &#8211; who has repeatedly said he won\u2019t implement a statewide mask mandate &#8211; has said when making political appointments to various boards he hopes people will do what he wants.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe certainly want our appointees to think the way we do and to encourage all the things that we\u2019re talking about,\u201d he said in November. \u201cSo I assume they would be right in line with where my beliefs are.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bollenbach had recently pushed for masking mandates in schools and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/2020\/11\/12\/oklahomas-state-board-of-education-begs-local-school-leaders-to-mandate-masks\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">accreditation sanctions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> against <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/2020\/11\/30\/virtual-charter-schools-are-booming-despite-a-checkered-reputation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Epic Charter Schools<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also had also supported seeking a legal opinion on discrimination rules surrounding Lindsey Nicole Henry scholarships for private schools.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Attorney General Mike Hunter<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oklahoman.com\/article\/5677547\/oklahoma-ag-weighs-in-on-student-discrimination-question\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ruled in an opinion Wednesday<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; the same day Bollenbach was removed &#8211; that rules saying private schools couldn\u2019t discriminate against students or teachers based on their religion or sexual orientation were unlawful.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stitt had previously <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tulsaworld.com\/news\/local\/stitt-removes-board-president-leading-inquiries-into-epic-charter-schools-and-board-member-conflicts-of\/article_130a8a24-2608-11eb-bef1-438bf1547bb6.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">removed John Harrington<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, chairman of the Statewide Virtual Charter School Board, following some of the actions he took trying to hold Epic accountable.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stitt\u2019s office provided the following statement about Crabtree.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Melissa Crabtree is a former teacher who is passionate about using her experience in the classroom to improve educational outcomes for all Oklahoma students. The governor believes she will be a great addition to the State Board of Education and appreciates Mr. Bollenbach\u2019s service to our state,\u201d\u00a0 Charlie Hannema, Chief of Communications for Stitt said in the written statement.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A question about why Bollenbach was removed wasn\u2019t immediately answered by the governor\u2019s office. An attempt to reach Bollenbach was unsuccessful.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bollenbach was appointed by Stitt in 2019 when the newly minted governor<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nondoc.com\/2019\/04\/26\/stitt-replaces-board-of-education\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> replaced four members of the board of education<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">State schools superintendent Joy Hofmeister provided the following statement about Bollenbach\u2019s dismissal and Crabtree\u2019s appointment.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cKurt Bollenbach has been an exceptional board member whose legal acumen, breadth of experience and commitment to excellence have been of great value to the State Board of Education,\u201d she said in the statement. \u201cHe is a man of tremendous principle and integrity. Of course, I look forward to meeting his successor on the board, Ms. Crabtree, and anticipate a good working relationship with her, but I will miss Kurt\u2019s bold leadership.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crabtree will most certainly not vote in favor of a masking mandate in schools. She\u2019s been a leader of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/enidfreedomfighters\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enid\u2019s Freedom Fighters group<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which has long strongly opposed a mask mandate.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a recent meeting where Enid passed a mask mandate, she spoke up against the idea, saying mandating masks was a bad idea, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.enidnews.com\/news\/enid-passes-mask-mandate-after-third-attempt\/article_9788ba86-345f-11eb-bac6-67c2d4848166.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enid News and Eagle reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe know you are not responsible for the deaths of members of our community. \u2026 I appeal to your conscience as strong men,\u201d Crabtree told the council, according to the Enid newspaper. \u201cI ask you to rise to the occasion and stand up to the voices of the liberal news media and bullies in our community.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Governor Kevin Stitt quietly removed and replaced State Board of Education member Kurt Bollenback of Kingfisher and replaced him with an anti-mask activist from Enid this week.Melissa Crabtree has been an outspoken critic of masking in Enid.
