So far, more than hundreds of cases have been discovered in more than 300 public school districts, charter and private schools. It isn\u2019t perfect, but it illustrates how the virus has spread in Oklahoma classrooms that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/2020\/07\/23\/oklahoma-state-board-of-education-punts-on-mask-mandate-for-schools\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only have safety recommendations rather than requirements<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This database is critical to having a better understanding of the reopening of Oklahoma schools amid the coronavirus pandemic.<\/span><\/p><p><iframe id=\"datawrapper-chart-pSqY2\" style=\"width: 0; min-width: 100% !important; border: none;\" title=\"Oklahoma school districts where the coronavirus has been reported\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/pSqY2\/89\/\" height=\"457\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" aria-label=\"Map\"><\/iframe><script type=\"text\/javascript\">!function(){\"use strict\";window.addEventListener(\"message\",(function(a){if(void 0!==a.data[\"datawrapper-height\"])for(var e in a.data[\"datawrapper-height\"]){var t=document.getElementById(\"datawrapper-chart-\"+e)||document.querySelector(\"iframe[src*='\"+e+\"']\");t&&(t.style.height=a.data[\"datawrapper-height\"][e]+\"px\")}}))}();\n<\/script><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on early and still developing research, children appear to be particularly\u00a0 contagious when it comes to the coronavirus. On top of that, school buildings have a lot of people coming into contact with each other and often contribute to community spread. That\u2019s why schools were suddenly shut down for the semester in the spring.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s unclear how long COVID-19 will be present in Oklahoma. School administrators are betting on certainly the rest of this semester, into next spring and possibly beyond.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And they\u2019ll <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/2020\/08\/24\/oklahoma-schools-covid-19-guidelines-are-widely-ignored-by-many-rural-districts\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">certainly be on their own in many ways<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> without direction from the state.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The state\u2019s health department isn\u2019t monitoring cases in schools or reporting that\u00a0 publicly.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">StateImpact plans to continue monitoring and compiling cases. An Oklahoma State Department of Education spokeswoman said that agency is currently working on a mechanism for school districts to report cases.
