{"id":30083,"date":"2018-05-23T16:06:40","date_gmt":"2018-05-23T21:06:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/?p=30083"},"modified":"2018-05-23T16:06:40","modified_gmt":"2018-05-23T21:06:40","slug":"lawsuit-accuses-juvenile-detention-center-of-neglect-letting-16-year-old-die","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/2018\/05\/23\/lawsuit-accuses-juvenile-detention-center-of-neglect-letting-16-year-old-die\/","title":{"rendered":"Lawsuit accuses juvenile detention center of neglect, letting 16-year-old die"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The estate of a 16-year-old boy who committed suicide in a Muskogee juvenile detention center has filed a lawsuit against multiple government agencies and employees arguing the boy\u2019s life could have \u201ceasily\u201d been saved if staff had done their jobs.<\/p><p>Billy Woods\u2019 estate is suing the Office of Juvenile Affairs, the Muskogee Board of County Commissioners, the Muskogee County Council of Youth Services \u2014 which operated the detention center \u2014 and a handful of detention center employees, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.readfrontier.org\/stories\/teen-died-in-juvenile-detention-center-died-as-result-of-neglect-indifference-suit-alleges\/\">Frontier reports<\/a>.<\/p><p>According to the lawsuit, which seeks money for actual and punitive damages, Woods told staff members he had attempted suicide previously and the staff could have saved his life if they had followed their own procedures and checked on him every 15 minutes.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>The suit suggests video cameras show Woods was unattended for more than two hours on the day he died, but staff members falsified logs to make it appear they had checked on Woods more frequently, the news site reports.<\/p><p>The suit is also critical of staff\u2019s failure to act when they found Woods unresponsive.
