{"id":2685,"date":"2011-12-09T09:40:04","date_gmt":"2011-12-09T15:40:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/?p=2685"},"modified":"2011-12-09T09:40:04","modified_gmt":"2011-12-09T15:40:04","slug":"december-sales-tax-revenues-up-14-2-in-tulsa-1-2-in-okc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/2011\/12\/09\/december-sales-tax-revenues-up-14-2-in-tulsa-1-2-in-okc\/","title":{"rendered":"December Sales Tax Revenues Up 14.2% in Tulsa, 1.2% in OKC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tulsa\u2019s December sales tax revenues jumped 14.2 percent compared to the same month last year.<\/p><p>The <em>Tulsa World<\/em>\u2019s Brian Barber <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tulsaworld.com\/news\/article.aspx?subjectid=334&articleid=20111209_11_A21_Tulsas151723&rss_lnk=16\">reports<\/a> that Tulsa\u2019s increase was partly due to an expiring tax share between the city and county.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>City voters in 2008 approved assuming the &#8220;4 to Fix&#8221; tax share when it expired to help fund the $451.6 million Fix Our Streets initiative.<\/p><\/blockquote><p>The city\u2019s December 2011 sales tax check was about $18.4 million, compared with the roughly $16.1 million it received in 2010.<\/p><p><!--more-->Oklahoma City saw a 1.2 percent increase during the same time period, the <em>World<\/em> reported.<\/p><p>The December total reflects sales taxes collected from Oct. 16 to Nov. 15 and doesn\u2019t include \u201cBlack Friday\u201d holiday shopping.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Still, Finance Director Mike Kier said taking the increase in the sales-tax rate into consideration, the city&#8217;s sales-tax revenue was up about 9 percent over December 2010, the World reported.<\/p><\/blockquote><p>Despite the good news, the paper\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tulsaworld.com\/opinion\/article.aspx?subjectid=61&articleid=20111209_61_A24_Theres123772\">editorial page<\/a> argued the sales tax bump alone wouldn\u2019t fix the city.<em><\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A healthier sales-tax payoff won&#8217;t solve the trash hauling dilemma, for instance. Having some extra money to work with will certainly make some decisions easier.<\/p><p>It won&#8217;t, however, be a magic elixir that will make everyone sing Kumbaya.
