Mary Fallin<\/p>\n<\/div><p>Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin on Monday signed legislation that clarifies state regulators&#8217; authority to take action on oil and gas operations linked to earthquakes.<!--more--><\/p><p>The measure, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oklegislature.gov\/BillInfo.aspx?Bill=HB3158&Session=1600\">House Bill 3158<\/a>, authored by Republican House Speaker Jeff Hickman of Fairview, takes effect immediately.<\/p><p>Speaking on the House floor <a href=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/2016\/03\/08\/house-approves-bill-clarifying-oil-regulators-authority-to-act-on-industry-linked-earthquakes\/\">in March<\/a>, Hickman said the legislation \u2014 which doesn&#8217;t mention earthquakes or seismicity specifically \u2014 reaffirms a power the Oklahoma Corporation Commission has already been asserting: The ability to &#8220;take whatever action is necessary,without notice and hearing&#8221; when responding to emergencies.<\/p><p>Scientists say Oklahoma\u2019s dramatic <a href=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/topic\/earthquakes-2\/\">spike in earthquakes<\/a> is likely related to oil-field waste fluid disposal operations. The Corporation Commission in 2015 <a href=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/2015\/11\/19\/oklahoma-oil-regulator-issues-new-restrictions-after-earthquakes-updated\/\">ramped up its efforts<\/a> to curb the shaking, asking scores of operators to shut down, reduce the depth, or limit the amount of fluid pumped into hundreds of underground disposal wells.<\/p><p>Most operators have agreed, but SandRidge Energy initially refused to comply, prompting the agency to prepare a legal challenge that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwiO2t-1vJ3MAhUJnIMKHdZKBqMQFggdMAA&url=https%3A%2F%2Fstateimpact.npr.org%2Foklahoma%2F2016%2F01%2F21%2Fafter-weeks-of-resistance-oklahoma-oil-company-agrees-to-shut-down-wells-near-earthquakes%2F&usg=AFQjCNFXU8Eqg8mulHVbY1K0iG7M4CSe4g&sig2=U0kWe4BDx_swiaHMkoHALQ\">was resolved<\/a> before it appeared in a courtroom.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Oklahoma Gov.
