The rain is welcome, but officials and experts warn the relief could be fleeting.<\/p><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/tracks\/205444239&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&visual=false\" height=\"150\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"no\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p><p><!--more-->Western and southwestern Oklahoma suffered the most over the last five years. The 2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CCUQFjAB&url=https%3A%2F%2Fstateimpact.npr.org%2Foklahoma%2F2014%2F05%2F22%2Foklahomas-withered-wheat-harvest-could-have-national-effects%2F&ei=OJxTVYCwFcTAtQWpu4GQDA&usg=AFQjCNG6-LaFDkXUkllPZ5YDi6nRqKmcKQ&sig2=nMBhaOExApIF_HFLdvQNuQ\">wheat harvest was a bust<\/a>, and evaporating reservoirs forced cities like Lawton, Altus and Duncan to ration water and hold urgent discussions about finding new public water sources.<\/p><p>\u201cWe hit our all-time low there around the middle of April,\u201d says Will Archer, manager of the Mountain Park Master Conservancy District, which includes Tom Steed Lake, a reservoir that supplies water to Frederick, Snyder, Altus and a wildlife management area called Hackberry Flat.<\/p><p>Granite rocks marked by a bright white line surround Tom Steed and remind lake-goers of how full the reservoir used to be. \u201cYou\u2019d think, \u2018Man, we\u2019ll never get there again,\u2019\u201d Archer says.<\/p><p>Today, the water level at Tom Steed Lake is about twice as high as it was a month ago. Archer says the rainfall had an immediate effect on the lake.<\/p><p>\u201cIt\u2019s just incredible the difference. The lake looks like it has new life,\u201d he says. With green trees and green grass out in the water, when you drive by, you can really tell what a rise we really had out in the lake.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Oceanic influence<\/h3><p>The period from April to mid-March was the wettest ever recorded in Oklahoma, says State Climatologist Gary McManus. The maps divide regions into six groups ranging from zero drought to &#8220;exceptional&#8221; drought. McManus says some parts of Oklahoma improved by two categories, which is rare. Currently, no region of Oklahoma is experiencing exceptional drought conditions, the most severe category.<\/p><p>The barrage of thunderstorms that spawned <a href=\"http:\/\/kgou.org\/post\/one-dead-after-oklahoma-flooding-tornadoes-fallin-declares-state-emergency\">tornadoes and widespread flooding throughout Oklahoma<\/a> on May 6 through May 9 was likely fueled by El Ni\u00f1o \u2014 an unusually warm <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elnino.noaa.gov\/\">ocean-atmosphere weather system<\/a> near the equator in the Pacific Ocean. This is one of the strongest El Ni\u00f1os during this time of the year that has been recorded since 1950, McManus says. The variables are endless. One complication is that there are often short periods of wet weather that pop up in the middle of longer-term droughts. Oklahoma saw such a rainy blip from October 2011 to March 2012, McManus says. The drought then returned.<\/p><p>\u201cWe\u2019re just a very hot and dry summer away from having drought conditions return where they\u2019re now leaving,\u201d he says. \u201cI always urge everyone to plan for dry periods because we know they\u2019ll return. They always return.\u201d<\/p><p>Will Archer, the manager at Tom Steed Lake, says residents and local and state officials have to make sure the recent rainfall doesn\u2019t wash away conservation efforts and l<a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/2014\/09\/11\/drought-stricken-southwest-oklahoma-towns-look-for-more-water-underground\/\">ong-term water planning<\/a>.<\/p><p>The city of Altus, for example, is restoring wells that tap aquifer water across the border in Texas. Lawton is dredging Waurika Lake so the city can access more of the water stored there, and Duncan is considering new pipeline projects to increase municipal water supplies.<\/p><p>\u201cIn southwest Oklahoma, we\u2019re looking at 5 and 10-year plans,\u201d he says. \u201cWe\u2019re not only preparing for this drought, but we\u2019re in the mindset to prepare for the next drought.\u201d<\/p><p>Archer says that while Tom Steed Lake now has twice as much water as it had a month ago, it\u2019s less than 50 percent full.
