There is <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/topic\/earthquakes-2\/\">a growing body of scientific research<\/a> that suggests oil and gas production is fueling this increase in seismic activity.<\/p><p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/content\/early\/2014\/07\/02\/science.1255802\">new paper published today<\/a> in the journal <em>Science<\/em>, suggests a small number of wastewater wells used in drilling operations could be responsible for many of the quakes.<\/p><p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h4>High-Volume Outliers<\/h4><p>In a field behind a drug store in southeast Oklahoma City, three large green tanks sit on a patch of gravel enclosed by a metal fence and signs that warn of<strong> <\/strong>video surveillance. Behind the gate is \u201cChambers,\u201d one of the highest-volume disposal wells in Oklahoma.<\/p><p>When the energy industry drills for oil and natural gas it often strikes water \u2014 a lot of water. It\u2019s usually briny and oily, and laced with metals and other chemicals. Oil companies inject that toxic wastewater back underground.<\/p><p>In recent years, the Chambers well has taken on more water than other disposal wells \u2014 about 1.6 million barrels a month, on average, data from the Oklahoma Corporation Commission show. It&#8217;s one of four southeast Oklahoma City wells that attracted the attention of Katie Keranen, a geophysics professor and research seismologist at Cornell University.<\/p><p>\u201cThese extremely high rates can cause a very large area to be stimulated or perturbed in the subsurface,\u201d Keranen says.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_20527\"  class=\"wp-caption module image right\" style=\"max-width: 300px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20527\" alt=\"Caption\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/files\/2014\/07\/20140630-seokwell200_WEB-300x199.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-media-credit\">Joe Wertz \/ StateImpact Oklahoma<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Three high-volume disposal wells identified by researchers occupy a single site in southeast Oklahoma City.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h4>New Research<\/h4><p>Keranen\u2019s new research focuses on an earthquake swarm near Jones, a small town northeast of Oklahoma City that has become one of the most earthquake-prone parts of the state.<\/p><p>Keranen has written several peer-reviewed papers linking disposal wells to Oklahoma\u2019s earthquake surge, as have <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/2014\/03\/10\/oklahomas-largest-earthquake-potentially-triggered-by-smaller-disposal-well-quake-new-study-suggests\/\">other federal and university scientists<\/a>. Previous research focused largely on quakes near Prague, Okla., where a <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/2014\/03\/10\/oklahomas-largest-earthquake-potentially-triggered-by-smaller-disposal-well-quake-new-study-suggests\/\">5.7-magnitude temblor<\/a> struck in November 2011, injuring two people and damaging more than a<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>dozen homes.<\/p><p>The methodology behind the new paper is unique. Keranen and her team fed earthquake and disposal well locations, times, pressure data, and wastewater volume measurements into a three-dimensional model of the rock layers, faults and water formations underground. The scientists wanted to find out how the wastewater flows underground, and where it goes.<\/p><p>Keranen\u2019s research shows that wastewater can travel a lot farther away from a disposal well than previously thought.<\/p><p>\u201cThe area that is perturbed away from these wells is very large,\u201d she says.<\/p><p>Her model shows the fluid spreading out over a large area and building up pressure underground. As this pressurized \u201cfront\u201d moves underground, it can put pressure on fault lines, causing them to slip and trigger an earthquake. About 700 residents showed up for the event, <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/2014\/06\/27\/town-hall-turns-testy-as-oklahomans-seek-action-and-answers-on-earthquakes\/\">which became heated<\/a>. There were boos and shouts for authorities to ban disposal wells, which would effectively ban oil and gas drilling \u2014 the state\u2019s single-largest economic driver.<\/p><p>\u201cI\u2019ll tell you what, when the earthquakes happen, a couple of them scared the crap out of me,\u201d local resident Angela Spotts says. \u201cThe animals are scared. My husband and I feel assaulted. Twenty-four seven \u2014 full assault.\u201d<\/p><p>Spotts doesn\u2019t think Oklahoma officials are doing enough to address public safety concerns posed by the tremors.<\/p><p>\u201cI ask why are we going to be so slow on the reaction,\u201d she says. \u201cThe industry has a big hold on this state.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>&#8216;Significant&#8217; Science<\/h4><p>Both the state\u2019s seismologist, Austin Holland, and the Corporation Commission\u2019s Tim Baker, who oversees disposal well permitting and regulation in Oklahoma, told the crowd that a moratorium was impossible and unnecessary.<\/p><p>Keranen says a ban would do little to stop the quakes.<\/p><p>\u201cIt would take likely years for this fluid pressure that\u2019s already there to diffuse away, and so you\u2019d see earthquakes continuing,\u201d she says.<\/p><p>While the new research suggests that high-volume disposal wells might be playing a big role in Oklahoma&#8217;s surge of earthquakes, it doesn&#8217;t blame any specific well for causing the quakes. Scientists say they will likely never have the data they need to prove that kind of cause and effect.<\/p><p>Tulsa-based New Dominion owns the four high-volume disposal wells highlighted in Keranen&#8217;s study. The company declined an interview request, but dismissed the findings in an emailed statement and said it&#8217;s operating within &#8220;permitted parameters&#8221; and cooperating with state officials:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>While New Dominion has not had adequate time to thoroughly review the paper, an initial review reflects it is premised on certain false assumptions. The company notes the author did not consult with NDL\u2019s geologist and engineers to determine whether her premises are in any way correct.\u00a0 At best, these incorrect assumptions are irresponsible. NDL will make no additional statements while it consults legal counsel on this issue.<\/em><\/p><p>The Corporation Commission has already adopted <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/2014\/03\/13\/regulator-votes-to-adopt-new-rules-for-disposal-wells-in-earthquake-prone-region\/\">stricter monitoring rules<\/a> for disposal wells, clamped down on some operators, and has <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/2014\/04\/17\/oklahoma-oil-and-gas-regulator-uses-red-tape-not-rules-to-manage-disposal-wells-in-earthquake-country\/\">eliminated some permit shortcuts<\/a> in quake-prone regions. Skinner, with the Corporation Commission, calls the new research \u201csignificant.\u201d<\/p><p>&#8220;This is a very important piece that needs to be carefully reviewed,\u201d he says.<\/p><p>Skinner also acknowledged that if Keranen&#8217;s research proves correct, the oil and gas industry\u2019s link to the earthquakes could actually be easier to manage.<\/p><p>That&#8217;s because while Oklahoma has thousands of these wastewater wells, regulators might only have to write rules for the small number of high-volume wells that may be causing the most shaking.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This year, Oklahoma has had more earthquakes than California.
