{"id":18169,"date":"2014-01-29T15:01:59","date_gmt":"2014-01-29T21:01:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/?p=18169"},"modified":"2014-01-29T15:01:59","modified_gmt":"2014-01-29T21:01:59","slug":"oklahoma-propane-supplier-has-never-seen-prices-this-high","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/2014\/01\/29\/oklahoma-propane-supplier-has-never-seen-prices-this-high\/","title":{"rendered":"Oklahoma Propane Supplier Has &#8216;Never Seen&#8217; Prices This High"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"module image alignright mceTemp\" id=\"attachment_18175\" style=\"width: 300px;\"><a class=\"fancybox\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/files\/2014\/01\/PropPic2.jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-18175\" alt=\"PropPic2\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/files\/2014\/01\/PropPic2-300x199.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-media-credit\">jasonwoodhead23 \/ Flickr<\/p>\n<\/div><p>The U.S. Energy Information Administration lists the current average price of propane nationwide at just over <a title=\"EIA link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.eia.gov\/dnav\/pet\/pet_pri_wfr_a_epllpa_prs_dpgal_w.htm\" target=\"_blank\">$4 per gallon<\/a>, more than a dollar higher than last week\u2019s record setting price of $2.96.<\/p><p>As <a title=\"StateImpactLink\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/2014\/01\/08\/its-cold-but-here-are-3-other-reasons-oklahoma-is-running-short-on-propane\/\">StateImpact reported<\/a> earlier this month, that\u2019s a big deal for the <a title=\"EIAlink\" href=\"http:\/\/apps1.eere.energy.gov\/states\/residential.cfm\/state=OK#sources\" target=\"_blank\">10 percent or so <\/a>of Oklahomans who rely on propane to heat their homes.<\/p><p>The <i>Tahlequah Daily Press<\/i>\u2019 <a title=\"TahlequahLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tahlequahdailypress.com\/local\/x1647918733\/Propane-prices-seeing-record-highs\" target=\"_blank\">Sean Rowley <\/a>talked to a local supplier in rural northeast Oklahoma:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cEveryone is having some problems,\u201d said Paul Laney, owner of Liberty Propane Co. in Cookson. \u201cI\u2019ve been in this business a lot of years, and I\u2019ve never seen anything come close to this.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><p><!--more-->It&#8217;s not unusual for propane prices to be higher during a cold winter, but a number of factors conspired to create this situation.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Reasons cited for the shortage include a colder-than-normal winter, the shutdown of a major pipeline for maintenance, temporary shutdowns at refineries and high precipitation during autumn, which required farmers to use more propane to dry corn harvests.<\/p><p>\u201cThere\u2019s a pipeline that runs from Kansas to Tulsa, which was shut down in the spring,\u201d Laney said. \u201cThat didn\u2019t create a problem with supply, but with distribution. Then we had a record corn crop \u2026 Then we\u2019ve had a record-cold winter and people are using a lot of propane\u2026\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><p>Laney told the paper he\u2019s stretching his supply by limiting delivery sizes, which he says has reduced the price for his propane.<\/p><p>The state government has also acted:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Shortages have led 24 states, including Oklahoma, to raise limits on driving hours fo operators of propane transport vehicles\u2026<\/p><p>Gov.
