{"id":13802,"date":"2013-04-16T07:54:57","date_gmt":"2013-04-16T12:54:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/?p=13802"},"modified":"2013-04-16T13:36:38","modified_gmt":"2013-04-16T18:36:38","slug":"series-of-earthquakes-recorded-northeast-of-oklahoma-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/2013\/04\/16\/series-of-earthquakes-recorded-northeast-of-oklahoma-city\/","title":{"rendered":"Updated: Series of Earthquakes Recorded Northeast of Oklahoma City"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/fusiontables\/embedviz?viz=MAP&q=select+col4+from+1mlD_CTedlQyIpBlwcQ45HfZnYgUwm8DoHYZgPD4&h=false&lat=35.728730763552896&lng=-97.0668300720215&z=11&t=3&l=col4&y=2&tmplt=2\" frameborder=\"no\" scrolling=\"no\" width=\"620\" height=\"300\"><\/iframe><\/p><p><strong>UPDATED 1:24 p.m. <\/strong><\/p><p>A series of small earthquakes were recorded early this morning northeast of Oklahoma City, data from the <a href=\"http:\/\/earthquake.usgs.gov\/earthquakes\/eventpage\/usb000g7we#summary\">U.S. Geological Survey<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.okgeosurvey1.gov\/\">Oklahoma Geological Survey<\/a> show.<\/p><p>The largest in the series was a 4.7-magnitude quake that rattled about 1:56 a.m. near Luther, preliminary data show. \u00a0A 4.6-magnitude quake was also recorded around 5:16 a.m. More than a dozen quakes have been recorded, OGS data show.<\/p><p>The epicenters of the quakes are located on the &#8220;northeast edge&#8221; of region near Jones, Okla., suspected of having <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/tag\/earthquakes\/\">oil and gas disposal wells that could have triggered earthquakes<\/a> in the past, University of Oklahoma seismologist Katie Keranen tells StateImpact.<\/p><p><!--more--><\/p><p>Keranen has studied other areas of Oklahoma that have been linked to disposal well-triggered quakes. Oklahoma&#8217;s largest earthquake \u2014 a 5.7-magnitude quake recorded in November 2011 near Prague \u2014 was likely triggered by nearby disposal wells, Keranen and three other seismologists concluded in <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/2013\/03\/26\/oklahoma-earthquake-was-largest-linked-to-injection-wells-new-study-suggests\/\">recently published<\/a> research.<\/p><p>Preliminary data on today&#8217;s quake series doesn&#8217;t match that of Oklahoma earthquakes that have been linked to disposal wells, Keranen says.<\/p><p>&#8220;These are very interesting.
