{"id":12350,"date":"2013-01-02T10:50:32","date_gmt":"2013-01-02T16:50:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/?p=12350"},"modified":"2013-01-02T10:50:56","modified_gmt":"2013-01-02T16:50:56","slug":"congress-puts-lake-thunderbird-on-life-support-as-water-levels-plummet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/2013\/01\/02\/congress-puts-lake-thunderbird-on-life-support-as-water-levels-plummet\/","title":{"rendered":"Congress Puts Lake Thunderbird on Life Support as Water Levels Plummet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Residents in Norman, Del City and Midwest City get their drinking water\u00a0from Lake Thunderbird, but levels have dropped during Oklahoma&#8217;s ongoing drought.<\/p><p>Norman Mayor Cindy Rosenthal <a href=\"http:\/\/www.news9.com\/story\/20481553\/lake-thunderbird-dangerously-low-congress-allows-additional-water-source\">says<\/a> the situation is &#8220;dire,&#8221; but Congress has stepped in with a short-term fix to allow Thunderbird to tap into a pipeline that carries water from Atoka to Oklahoma City. <em><a title=\"NormanTranscriptLink\" href=\"http:\/\/normantranscript.com\/headlines\/x1746073030\/Bill-passes-for-Lake-Thunderbird\" target=\"_blank\">The Norman Transcript<\/a><\/em>\u00a0reports on the\u00a0Lake Thunderbird Efficient Use Act:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[Central Oklahoma Master Conservancy District] General Manager Randy Worden said negotiations with Oklahoma City will start immediately. Worden said passage of the bill will allow COMCD to provide adequate water supplies.<\/p><p>\u201cWe\u2019re very grateful,\u201d Worden said. \u201cWe\u2019ll get a contract executed with Oklahoma City before we can actually put water in the lake. It\u2019s their pipeline, so we have to abide by their rules.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><p><!--more-->Using the Atoka line as a supplement won&#8217;t solve the problem, however. While residents are currently being <em>asked<\/em> to conserve water, Mayor Rosenthal <a href=\"http:\/\/www.news9.com\/story\/20481553\/lake-thunderbird-dangerously-low-congress-allows-additional-water-source\">tells KWTV<\/a> that officials are likely to issue &#8220;mandatory rationing.&#8221;<\/p><p>And with the drought expected to drag on for years to come, more long-term solutions are being considered. From KWTV:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>City leaders are also considering the possibility of building a new reservoir in the area.
