{"id":10132,"date":"2012-09-26T15:08:47","date_gmt":"2012-09-26T20:08:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/?p=10132"},"modified":"2012-12-20T09:57:48","modified_gmt":"2012-12-20T15:57:48","slug":"oklahoma-wind-to-power-google-data-center","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/2012\/09\/26\/oklahoma-wind-to-power-google-data-center\/","title":{"rendered":"Oklahoma Wind Will Power Google Data Center"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s a win for Oklahoma&#8217;s wind-energy industry, which has been <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/2012\/09\/25\/fallin-and-romney-got-99-percent-in-common-but-this-tax-credit-aint-one\/\">battered by layoffs and uncertainty<\/a> surrounding that soon-to-expire federal tax credit.<\/p><p>Google has inked a deal with the Grand River Dam Authority to buy wind power from the Canadian Hills Wind Farm in central Oklahoma.<\/p><p>Gary Demasi, director of the search giant&#8217;s global infrastructure team <a href=\"http:\/\/googleblog.blogspot.com\/2012\/09\/more-renewable-energy-for-our-data.html\">writes about the wind deal<\/a> on Google&#8217;s corporate blog:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In conjunction with the electricity GRDA already supplies Google to operate its data center, Google will pay GRDA a premium to purchase renewable energy generated by Canadian Hills. This brings the total amount of renewable energy for which Google has contracted to over 260 MW.<\/p><\/blockquote><p><!--more--><\/p><p>The deal is\u00a0significant\u00a0because it &#8220;shows how large customers like Google can play a role in promoting renewable energy by local utilities,&#8221; Greenpeace&#8217;s\u00a0Gary Cook <a href=\"http:\/\/www.datacenterknowledge.com\/archives\/2012\/09\/26\/google-provisions-more-wind-power\/\">tells datacenterknowledge.com&#8217;s Rich Miller<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Google faced a local grid mix of over 50 percent coal power for its Oklahoma data center.
