“Love County Meeting Provides Some Answers, Explanations About Recent Earthquakes”

More than 120 concerned residents in Love County packed a town hall event to learn more about a swarm of earthquakes that shook the area in September.

Most of the activity is centered around a recently installed saltwater disposal well at the intersection of U.S. Highway 77 and Oswalt Road. Since the quakes, the corporation commission limited the well to 10,000 barrels per day, but the operator decided to shut down, as it was not profitable enough to keep it running given the current circumstances. “[Holland] was hesitant to draw a direct connection between the well and the earthquakes,” Simpson explained. “It is somewhat of a coincidence that the earthquakes have happened right around that drill, and I know the well owner. He is concerned about the community, and if it turns out that his well is causing this, I’m sure he’ll do the right thing.”
