“Changing Directions: Horizontal Drilling, Earthquakes Forcing Regulators to Reconsider Rules”

Oklahoma is experiencing some growing pains as its oil and gas regulator considers changing rules to accommodate horizontal drilling.

The commission is considering new rules that would require injection well operators who dispose of water in the Arbuckle formation to be ready to provide the daily volume and pressure figures. “What we are proposing is that operators have to keep daily volume and pressure logs of any well that disposes into the Arbuckle,” Murphy said. “And, when we request access, they have to provide that. We’ve had a fantastic response to this. It has not been controversial.”
