A tentative contract between the Cleveland school district and its teachers union would replace the annual pay raises teachers get for accumulating years of experience or additional education with raises tied to their performance, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
Performance will be measured partly by ratings under a new statewide model for evaluating teachers that takes into account their students’ growth as well as classroom observations.
But there will be other, yet-to-be-determined ways for teachers to climb up the salary scale too, the Plain Dealer reports.
Under the new contract, teachers and other staff would also get a 4-percent raise for the next school year and an additional raise in the third year years, in addition to the pay increases tied to performance.
Teachers would also add 40 minutes to their work day to spend on lesson planning or meeting with families, and they’d have to pay more into their healthcare plans.
The raises come after voters approved a levy last year that adds about $77 million each year to the district’s $670 million operating budget.
In Toledo, negotiations between the district and the teachers union are underway, the Toledo Blade reports.

Board President Brenda Hill said Thursday she would personally “love to give [employees] back some” pay they have given up in recent years, though she added budgets might make that impossible.
