State Board of Education President Debe Terhar is taking heat for a post on her personal Facebook page.
The item came from a conservative page critical of President Obama’s gun control proposals.
Now some liberal groups are calling for Terhar’s resignation.
Terhar released a statement, saying:
“I did not compare our President to Adolph Hitler. Like millions of Facebook users, I simply shared a photograph on Facebook posted by another person. I regret the consequences of carelessly sharing that picture and I will be more selective in my use of social media in the future. I am committed to improving the quality of education for Ohio’s children and will continue to work tirelessly to achieve that goal.”
But not everyone is buying that defense.
“She has no business being on the state board of education when she trolls racist right wing websites and extracts quotes that first aren’t even true and then also compare the president of the United States with Adolf Hitler,” says Dale Butland of the liberal think-tank Innovation Ohio.
Innovation Ohio and the Ohio Democratic Party have both called for Terhar’s resignation because of the Facebook post.
Ohio School Board member Deborah Cain did not call for Terhar’s resignation, but says she did not like the Hitler reference.
“I was disappointed someone in her position would feel the need to reference someone like Hitler when she is discussing a policy that is first of all very volatile for people right now,” Cain says. “We need to have an open dialogue on this, and to use somebody that is quite a despicable character is a shame.”
Terhar has since deleted her facebook account.
