The retiring chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents, Jim Petro, says his greatest accomplishment while heading up the state’s higher education initiatives was to foster greater collaboration with the Ohio Department of Education.

Petro reflected on his 29 year career in Ohio government and politics with statehouse correspondent Bill Cohen.

“Many people will remember several years ago when the higher education coordinating head and the K-12 coordinating head never spoke to one another. They had some words at one point, and were angry, and had no further communication. Well, you know, that doesn’t fly with me. So I’ve strived to be very collaborative, and that collaboration now extends to the fact that we’re locating our headquarters offices and 70 employees that work up here in the Ohio Department of Education building.”

Although Petro has struggled with some medical issues recently, he says his decision to retire comes from a passion to lecture about wrongful convictions in the justice system. He is set to retire on February 1, 2013.
