And people that are really good at what they do, they want to play with other people that are really good at what they do.  So the attraction is not necessarily geographic location. But I would suggest, in general, most of our employees are at least college-educated.  I would say probably more than half of them have advanced degrees, Ph.D&#8217;s, Master&#8217;s,&#8221; Gengross says.  &#8220;And so those people, they&#8217;re done with grad school, and thinking about what they&#8217;re going to do next. We&#8217;ve had very, very few people leave.  And we&#8217;ve not had issues with people leaving to go to competing companies. A lot of people worked for that company.  That company had been acquired [by Merck].  It&#8217;s now a Merck research site here.  So not only do they have fairly stable jobs here,&#8221; Gerngross says, &#8220;but they made out very well financially, and word has gotten out that we treat people fairly, we want them to be part of something exciting and something that creates real value.&#8221;\n\t\t\t\t<\/dd><\/dl>\n\t\t\t<br style='clear: both' \/>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p><em>As part of our weekly \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/voices\/\">Getting By, Getting Ahead<\/a>\u201d series, StateImpact is traveling across New Hampshire, gathering personal stories from the people behind the economy.\u00a0 In our third installment, we visit a biotech start-up in the Dartmouth-Lake Sunapee region.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">_____<\/p>\n<p>Deep inside a nondescript business park in Lebanon, a blocky, industrial building is getting a facelift.\u00a0 The inside has already been revamped, with big, glass-walled hallways and bright orange accent walls. Every so often, the staccato of hammers, whirring of drills and hiss of nail guns disrupt the\u00a0quiet.<\/p>\n<p>But those are just the sounds you want to hear when you\u2019re running a young business you want to grow.<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s just what\u2019s happening at the drug discovery company <a title=\"Adimab\" href=\"http:\/\/www.adimab.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Adimab<\/a> in Lebanon.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe haven\u2019t seen any slowdown tied to the current recession,\u201d says co-founder and CEO Tillman Gerngross.<\/p>\n<p>In some ways, Gerngross is the father of the <a title=\"Dartmouth-Lake Sunapee Snapshot: Burgeoning Start-Up Scene Wrestles With Recruitment Challenge\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/2012\/07\/09\/dartmouth-lake-sunapee-snapshot-burgeoning-start-up-scene-wrestles-with-recruitment-challenge\/\" target=\"_blank\">Upper Valley&#8217;s biotech community<\/a>.\u00a0Originally from Austria, Gerngross came here in the late 1990s to be a professor of bioengineering at\u00a0<a title=\"Dartmouth College\" href=\"http:\/\/dartmouth.edu\" target=\"_blank\">Dartmouth College<\/a>. Adimab is the second venture he&#8217;s spun out from his Dartmouth research. The pharmaceutical giant Merck bought his first company for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dartmouthengineer.com\/2006\/10\/innovations-fall-2006\/\">$400 million<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F52012388&amp;show_artwork=true\" height=\"166\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"no\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s remarkable for me is to look back,&#8221; says Gengross, who is 48. &#8220;When I came here in \u201998, there was no biotech industry here in the Upper Valley. Now, over the years, there are over 100 people &#8212; just the companies I started.\u00a0 So all of a sudden, there is this organic growth triggered by a few entrepreneurial people that have started to build a small little fledgling industry here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And Gerngross says most of the credit for that belongs to one place, \u201cWithout Dartmouth, this would all not exist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over the past decade or so, the intellectual capital at the college has been generating dividends.\u00a0 At any given time, 30 to 50 start-ups are working to make it big in the Upper Valley. Biotech companies in particular are known for clustering in cities like Cambridge, Massachusetts, or San Francisco &#8212; places where there are plenty of workers with specialized skills.\u00a0\u201cPeople find it hard to envision moving here,&#8221; Gerngross says.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s something a lot of area start-ups have struggled with.\u00a0 Ultimately, a number of these companies have succumbed to workforce needs or investor pressure and moved.\u00a0 Adimab is among a handful of successful exceptions. Gerngross hires people away from the West Coast and Boston &#8212; and gets them to stay.<\/p>\n<p>How does he do it? One way is through creating a work culture at Adimab that looks and acts like a cool California start-up.\u00a0The workers are mainly young, 20- and 30-somethings, and there\u2019s not a lab coat in sight.<\/p>\n<div class=\"module image left\" style=\"width: 250px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/voices\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full\" title=\"Getting By, Getting Ahead\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2012\/07\/voices-promo.png\" width=\"250\" height=\"247\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Listen to voices of New Hampshire\u2019s economy and share your story in an <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/voices\/\">interactive audio experience \u00bb<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>But the bigger draw is money. Adimab doesn&#8217;t offer especially high salaries compared to others in the industry, but it does offer employees significant amounts of equity in the firm. That way, if the company makes it big or gets bought, the employees will share in the riches.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a very different company,&#8221;\u00a0Gerngross says. &#8220;We are taking a philosophy that is much more rewarding to the individual employees than any start-up company that I know. They own about 14 times more than they would own of any other company in any of the biotech hubs like the Bay Area and Boston.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is also where having a track record of success has paid off. \u00a0When Gerngross sold his last company to Merck, the people who worked there didn&#8217;t just get big paydays.
