{"id":946,"date":"2011-08-24T15:17:57","date_gmt":"2011-08-24T19:17:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/?p=946"},"modified":"2011-08-24T15:17:57","modified_gmt":"2011-08-24T19:17:57","slug":"berlin-super-fund-site-a-continuing-concern","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/2011\/08\/24\/berlin-super-fund-site-a-continuing-concern\/","title":{"rendered":"Berlin Super Fund Site A Continuing Concern"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The die-off of the North Country&#8217;s paper <a title=\"Mills: The Fading Economy Of Old New England\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/tag\/mills\/\" target=\"_blank\">mill<\/a> industry has left economic scars on the <a title=\"A Forest Of Economic Issues In The North Country\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/tag\/north-country\/\" target=\"_blank\">North Country<\/a>.\u00a0 But as <a title=\"EPA Investigates Berlin Toxic Waste Site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nhpr.org\/epa-investigates-berlin-toxic-waste-site\" target=\"_blank\">NHPR&#8217;s Amy Quinton recently reported, it&#8217;s also left environmental scars<\/a>.\u00a0 And we&#8217;re only now learning the shape of them,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div>&#8220;A toxic waste site in Berlin, New Hampshire continues to leak mercury into the Androscoggin River&#8230;<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"themaincontentarea\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<blockquote><p>The EPA listed it as a federal Superfund site six years ago.\u00a0 But\u00a0the EPA has just begun its investigation to determine if the site poses any health risks, and how it can be cleaned up.&#8221;<!--more--><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Quinton reports the super fund in question is the former ChlorAlikali plant in Berlin.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia;\">&#8220;<a><\/a><\/span>From the 1890\u2019s until the 1960\u2019s, paper companies produced chlorine and other caustic chemicals for use in paper manufacturing.\u00a0 The companies disposed of toxic chemicals and metals like mercury, lead, and dioxins on site.\u00a0 Darryl Luce, with the EPA, says even though the last building was demolished is 1999, mercury is still leaking from contaminated groundwater and soil.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_948\"  class=\"wp-caption module image right\" style=\"max-width: 130px;\"><a class=\"fancybox\" title=\"Dartmouth researchers examining the effects of mercury on aquatic life at Berlin super fund site.\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2011\/08\/researchersberlin4.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-948\" title=\"researchersberlin4\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2011\/08\/researchersberlin4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"130\" height=\"87\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">Chris Jensen \/ NHPR<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dartmouth researchers examining the effects of mercury on aquatic life at Berlin super fund site.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8216;The site itself now is a four point six acre area of wood chips, two feet of wood chips, it sits on top of an impermeable liner, cap, the hope at the time when they closed the facility, that was back in 1999, they had hoped that that would cut off the flow, but it never did.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Over the next seven years, New Hampshire environmental officials and the property owners removed more than 135 pounds of mercury and mercury-containing soils from the river and its bank.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to Quinton, a big concern for the\u00a0Dartmouth scientists who are studying the mercury&#8217;s effects on the Androscoggin is &#8220;biomagnification.&#8221;\u00a0 That&#8217;s what happens when mercury enters the water, and creatures low on the food chain, like bugs, ingest a small amount.\u00a0 The animals that eat those bugs take in even more mercury, and the animals that eat <em>them <\/em>get an even larger dose.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since the Androscoggin is a fast-flowing river, there&#8217;s also concern about mercury migrating downstream.\u00a0 Quinton reports the investigation expected to wrap-up in about a year.\u00a0 Then, the EPA can decide on how best to clean up the site.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The die-off of the North Country&#8217;s paper mill industry has left economic scars on the North Country.\u00a0 But as NHPR&#8217;s Amy Quinton recently reported, it&#8217;s also left environmental scars.\u00a0 And we&#8217;re only now learning the shape of them, &#8220;A toxic waste site in Berlin, New Hampshire continues to leak mercury into the Androscoggin River&#8230;
