{"id":8313,"date":"2012-05-10T14:16:00","date_gmt":"2012-05-10T18:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/?p=8313"},"modified":"2012-05-10T14:16:00","modified_gmt":"2012-05-10T18:16:00","slug":"survey-says-not-all-nh-counties-equally-small-business-friendly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/2012\/05\/10\/survey-says-not-all-nh-counties-equally-small-business-friendly\/","title":{"rendered":"Survey Says Not All NH Counties Equally Small Business-Friendly"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_8314\"  class=\"wp-caption module image right\" style=\"max-width: 225px;\"><a class=\"fancybox\" title=\"A recent survey found that perceptions of NH's small business-friendliness vary widely by region\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2012\/05\/5445149785_fcef2aa1d7.jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8314\" title=\"Fresh Fish Daley In Exeter\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2012\/05\/5445149785_fcef2aa1d7-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2012\/05\/5445149785_fcef2aa1d7-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2012\/05\/5445149785_fcef2aa1d7.jpg 375w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">NHPR<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">A new survey finds that perceptions of NH&#39;s small business-friendliness vary widely by region<\/p><\/div>\n<p>If you&#8217;re looking for some of the happiest small business owners in the state, the <a title=\"How The Monadnock Region's Economy Works\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/tag\/monadnock-region\/\" target=\"_blank\">Monadnock Region<\/a> would be a good place to start.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, we looked at <a title=\"Survey Gives NH \u201cA\u201d In Small Business Friendliness\u2026But With A Catch\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/2012\/05\/09\/survey-gives-nh-a-in-small-business-friendliness-but-with-a-catch\/\" target=\"_blank\">how the Granite State stacks-up to the rest of the country<\/a> in terms of its <a title=\"Small Businesses, But Mighty Numbers\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/tag\/small-business\/\" target=\"_blank\">small business<\/a> environment.\u00a0 A <a title=\"United States Small Business Friendliness \" href=\"http:\/\/www.thumbtack.com\/survey#states\" target=\"_blank\">survey<\/a> of about 6,000 business owners released by the <a title=\"Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation: About The Kauffman Foundation\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kauffman.org\/Section.aspx?id=About_The_Foundation\" target=\"_blank\">Kaufman Foundation<\/a> and online hiring service <a title=\"Thumbtack.com\" href=\"http:\/\/thumbtack.com\" target=\"_blank\">Thumbtack.com<\/a> finds that overall, New Hampshire does very well.\u00a0 Respondents rate it well above the rest of the Northeast, and even much of the country:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;New Hampshire soared above its rivals in two categories where it excelled &#8211; Starting our own business here was easy and affordable! We also do events all over New England and beyond!&#8217;\u2014Disc Jockey and Photographer, Hillsborough County<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Registering my business was fairly easy and inexpensive. I believe the taxes are pretty low, and I have been very busy. I have not found any training programs for my profession. It was easy to start my business.&#8217;\u2014Gutter Installation, Hillsborough County<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;New Hampshire is very supportive to creating a favorable tax environment, but they tend to have a mostly hands-off approach as to assisting small business, in my opinion.&#8217;\u2014Interior Decorator, Hillsborough County&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>For its part, the <a title=\"What You Need To Know About The Seacoast's Economy\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/tag\/seacoast\/\" target=\"_blank\">Seacoast<\/a> got middling marks, which is also reflected in some of the business owners&#8217; ambivalent comments:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00a0&#8220;&#8216;My experience is that it&#8217;s very hard to do legitimate business in my industry because of the dishonesty of venue owners, fueled by the constant micro management of the state liquor commission and health board as well as the failing economy.&#8217;\u2014DJ Rockingham County<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It isn&#8217;t necessarily complicated to do business, but getting up and running is tedious and time consuming.&#8217;\u2014Insurance Broker, Strafford County&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Meanwhile, the rest of the state, ranging from the <a title=\"The Ultimate Guide To The North Country Economy\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/tag\/north-country\/\" target=\"_blank\">North Country<\/a> down to the capital, rated &#8220;Worst&#8221; in the state for small business:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c&#8217;Statewide is very good; local government is very tough on new business development.&#8217;\u2014Audio and Video Technician, Grafton County<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I have been trying unsuccessfully to register my business with the state and also tried to form an LLC. Regardless of the paperwork done and the hoops I have to jump through, the state of NH adamantly refuses to allow me to register my name or incorporate my business. They have no problem taking my fees though!&#8217;\u2014Mold Remediation, Belknap County<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Just recently has net access been available all over NH! This has been a huge setback.&#8217;\u2014Event Entertainer, Merrimack County&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Overall, the survey ranks New Hampshire the fifth in the country for ease of starting a small business.\u00a0 And it places eighth in terms of overall small business-friendliness.\u00a0 But when respondents are more subdued when it comes to the daily business grind.\u00a0 While the Granite State ranks sixteenth for economic health, it&#8217;s only thirty-third for business growth.\u00a0 And despite a relatively strong economic showing, New Hampshire ranks forty-fifth among states for optimism about the <a title=\"Your Guide To New Hampshire's Economy\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/tag\/newhampshireeconomy\/\" target=\"_blank\">economy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a lot more information available on the survey, complete with an <a title=\"New Hampshire Small Business Friendliness \" href=\"http:\/\/www.thumbtack.com\/nh\/\" target=\"_blank\">interactive state map<\/a> we highly recommend you check out.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you&#8217;re looking for some of the happiest small business owners in the state, the Monadnock Region would be a good place to start.
