The former Borders on Fort Eddy Road is now a Books-A-Million.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Bookstore owner Michael Herrmann&#8217;s expansion, Duprey said, is &#8216;a huge commitment to replacing what was lost when Borders was closed. It is a remarkable commitment to the downtown, instead of a mall. And for an independent bookseller to do that, it&#8217;s just a great move for this community. It will help anchor downtown.'&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><div class=\"related-content alignright\"><h4 class=\"related-header\">Related<\/h4><div class=\"links\"><h5>Posts<\/h5><ul><li class=\"link\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/2011\/09\/19\/are-small-businesses-really-an-innovative-economic-engine\/\">Are Small Businesses Really An Innovative Economic Engine?<\/a><\/li><li class=\"link\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/2011\/07\/21\/whats-a-kobo-again\/\">Why Borders Books Failed and Barnes &amp; Noble Didn\u2019t<\/a><\/li><li class=\"link\"><a href=\"http:\/\/nhpr.org\/post\/local-investors-step-save-book-store\">Local Investors Step in to Save Book Store<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/div><div class=\"topics\"><h5>Topics<\/h5><p class=\"topic\"><img class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2011\/07\/356324626_9e95b5311f-60x60.jpg\" height=\"60\" width=\"60\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/topic\/small-business\/\">Small Businesses, But Mighty Numbers<\/a><\/p><\/div><\/div>Two points about Duprey&#8217;s remarks (and reported remarks) are interesting.\u00a0 The first\u00a0 is the fact that a big-box bookstore&#8211;<a title=\"Borders Group, Inc.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bordersreorganization.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Borders<\/a>&#8211;was considered a &#8220;community&#8221; space in the mid-sized locale of Concord.\u00a0 After all, the big box model is predicated on the notion that the store in Concord could just as easily be the store in Manchester or the store in St. Louis.\u00a0 And as for Duprey&#8217;s Borders-as-community-gathering-place comment&#8230;that&#8217;s been a key argument made by independent booksellers <em>against <\/em>patronizing large chain stores.\u00a0 That&#8217;s the indie sellers&#8217; niche.\u00a0 So the notion that Gibson&#8217;s will fill the void in the community left by <em>Borders<\/em> flips the script of the <a title=\"Who's Buying the Bookstore? \" href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB120062371134999641.html\" target=\"_blank\">old national David vs. Goliath narrative<\/a>. (Although admittedly, that <a title=\"End Of Days For Bookstores?
