{"id":7607,"date":"2012-04-16T13:51:49","date_gmt":"2012-04-16T17:51:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/?p=7607"},"modified":"2012-04-16T13:51:49","modified_gmt":"2012-04-16T17:51:49","slug":"dartmouth-college-president-will-head-world-bank","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/2012\/04\/16\/dartmouth-college-president-will-head-world-bank\/","title":{"rendered":"Dartmouth College President Will Head World Bank"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_7610\"  class=\"wp-caption module image right\" style=\"max-width: 194px;\"><a class=\"fancybox\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2012\/04\/141759106.jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7610\" title=\"Dartmouth College President Jim Yong Kim\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2012\/04\/141759106-194x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"194\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2012\/04\/141759106-194x300.jpg 194w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2012\/04\/141759106-620x958.jpg 620w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2012\/04\/141759106.jpg 1940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 194px) 100vw, 194px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">Brendan Smialowski \/ AFP\/Getty Images<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\"> Jim Yong Kim will take over the World Bank presidency this summer<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It&#8217;s official: <a>Dartmouth College<\/a> President Jim Yong Kim will head the <a title=\"World Bank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">World Bank<\/a> starting in July.\u00a0 But the <a title=\"World Bank Officially Selects Kim as President\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/04\/17\/business\/global\/world-bank-officially-selects-kim-as-president.html?_r=1&amp;smid=tw-nytimes&amp;seid=auto\" target=\"_blank\"><em>New York Times&#8217; <\/em>Annie Lowrey reports<\/a> that this time around, the board&#8217;s vote was more than just a rubber-stamping process:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;While the selection of Dr. Kim by the bank&#8217;s 25-member executive board was no surprise, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/03\/30\/business\/global\/in-a-shift-the-world-bank-presidency-draws-competition.html\">the board had, for the first time, considered more than one candidate<\/a>, a reflection of the increasing clout of emerging-market nations on the global stage.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Kim faced challenges from Nigerian Finance Minister and former World Bank Managing Director Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, and Colombian Jos\u00e9 Antonio Ocampo of the UN, who formerly worked with the Colombian Central Bank.\u00a0 But, Lowrey reports, they were long-shots.\u00a0 That&#8217;s because &#8220;Europe, the United States and Japan control about half of the voting shares.&#8221;\u00a0 <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>What their candidacies <em>did<\/em> do, she writes, is pump some life into the old debate about whether an American should always be in charge of the DC-based World Bank.\u00a0 As an acknowledgement of their growing influence, Lowrey notes that Kim worked to cultivate support for his candidacy among emerging markets with a listening tour.\u00a0 She also cites recent comments:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/economix.blogs.nytimes.com\/2012\/04\/12\/why-jim-yong-kim-wants-to-run-the-world-bank\">&#8220;In a recent interview<\/a>, Dr. Kim stressed that he wanted to make the bank as inclusive as possible, while achieving its mission of eradicating poverty and supporting economic development.<\/p>\n<p>He also said he wanted to make the bank\u2019s programs more data-driven. &#8216;There\u2019s no one-size-fits-all.
