{"id":7032,"date":"2012-03-15T11:36:53","date_gmt":"2012-03-15T15:36:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/?p=7032"},"modified":"2012-03-15T11:37:41","modified_gmt":"2012-03-15T15:37:41","slug":"report-nh-barely-passes-on-government-spending-transparency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/2012\/03\/15\/report-nh-barely-passes-on-government-spending-transparency\/","title":{"rendered":"Report: NH Barely Passes On Government Spending Transparency"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_7039\"  class=\"wp-caption module image right\" style=\"max-width: 300px;\"><a class=\"fancybox\" title=\"New Hampshire's no longer failing in transparency ratings...but not by much\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2012\/03\/3878048807_cd0d65a250.jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7039\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2012\/03\/3878048807_cd0d65a250-300x288.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2012\/03\/3878048807_cd0d65a250-300x288.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2012\/03\/3878048807_cd0d65a250-220x211.jpg 220w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2012\/03\/3878048807_cd0d65a250.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">chrisinplymouth \/ Flickr<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">New Hampshire&#39;s no longer failing in transparency ratings...but not by much<\/p><\/div>\n<p>New Hampshire has a long history of frugality.\u00a0 And with the current crop of spending hawks in the legislature, that <a title=\"Charting NH\u2019s Incredible Shrinking Government\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/2012\/03\/14\/charting-nhs-incredible-shrinking-government\/\" target=\"_blank\">sense of thrift has only intensified<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But you&#8217;ll have a hard time if you want to keep tabs on state spending online.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s according to &#8220;<a title=\"Following The Money 2012\" href=\"http:\/\/www.uspirg.org\/sites\/pirg\/files\/reports\/Following%20the%20Money%20vUS%20WEB.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Following The Money 2012<\/a>,&#8221; a report published by the clunky-titled <a title=\"US Public Interest Research Group Education Fund\" href=\"http:\/\/www.uspirgedfund.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">US Public Interest Research Group Education Fund<\/a>.\u00a0 US PIRG analyzed and rated the ability of citizens to check up on government spending in each state.\u00a0 And as <a title=\"New Hampshire gets D-minus in report gauging transparency in spending \" href=\"http:\/\/www.nashuatelegraph.com\/news\/953558-196\/new-hampshire-gets-d-minus-in-report-gauging.html\" target=\"_blank\">Joseph Cote of the <em>Nashua Telegraph<\/em> writes<\/a>, with its D- grade, the Granite State is a hair&#8217;s breadth from failing:<!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;New Hampshire\u2019s grade is an improvement from last year when it was one of six states to get a failing grade.<\/p>\n<p>Since the last report, New Hampshire has added a checkbook feature on <a title=\"Transparent NH\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nh.gov\/transparentnh\/\" target=\"_blank\">TransparencyNH<\/a>, which lets users see payment information to vendors from 53 state departments and agencies dating back to July 2008&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>However, it\u2019s difficult to find specific payments because the State Expenditure Register isn\u2019t searchable, according to NHPIRG.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But on this particular issue, New Hampshire isn&#8217;t much different from most of New England.\u00a0 In fact, the region is over-represented in the D- bracket, making up half of these grades nationwide.\u00a0 US PIRG assigned Maine, Rhode Island and Vermont D-&#8216;s as well.<\/p>\n<p>The only New England standouts were Massachusetts, with an A-, and Connecticut, with a solid B.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New Hampshire has a long history of frugality.\u00a0 And with the current crop of spending hawks in the legislature, that sense of thrift has only intensified.
