It seemed like we had everybody against us: the Navy, the Secretary of Defense, the whole Pentagon. But we had the facts, and we had unity. And together, we kept open the best shipyard in the country.<\/p>\n<p>We have with us today two of the workers who helped lead that fight, Paul O\u2019Conner and JJ Joyal.<\/p>\n<p>Now, there are plans for a new round of base closures. Well we stand ready. We\u2019re not going to let them close our shipyard! This is not a partisan issue. On this, I know all of New Hampshire will stand together.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s get out the t-shirts and the buses. Let\u2019s get ready to showcase our wonderful shipyard workers. Let the federal government try. We\u2019re going to win again \u2013 together.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard was originally up for consideration for closure back in 2005 as part of the Pentagon&#8217;s Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process.<\/p>\n<p>Seven years later, talk of big spending cuts at the Pentagon&#8211;to the tune of $487 billion over 10 years&#8211;have set regional politicians on edge about the fate of the Portsmouth facility.\u00a0 <a title=\"Sen. Shaheen wants BRAC forestalled indefinitely\" href=\"http:\/\/m.seacoastonline.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?aid=\/20120130\/NEWS\/201300323&amp;template=wapart\" target=\"_blank\">As Deborah McDermott reports for SeacoastOnline.com reports<\/a>, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta is talking about tightening the budget by starting-up two new rounds of the BRAC process:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_5701\"  class=\"wp-caption module image right\" style=\"max-width: 207px;\"><a class=\"fancybox\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2012\/01\/92086965.jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5701\" title=\"Democratic Senators Call For Extension In Unemployment Benefits\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2012\/01\/92086965-300x434.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"207\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2012\/01\/92086965-300x434.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2012\/01\/92086965-620x897.jpg 620w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/new-hampshire\/files\/2012\/01\/92086965-220x318.jpg 220w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 207px) 100vw, 207px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">Chip Semodovilla \/ Getty Images<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\"> Senator Jeanne Shaheen has been one of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard&#39;s most vocal advocates of late<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;[US Senator Jeanne] Shaheen said she&#8217;s hopeful a new BRAC process could be forestalled indefinitely, given the strong bipartisan response&#8217;&#8230;against such an action.<\/p>\n<p>As much to the point, Senate Armed Services Committee chairman Carl Levin and ranking member John McCain have both spoken against the proposal&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Shaheen said it&#8217;s also important to note that the final tally of the 2005 round is still unknown, &#8216;so it&#8217;s premature to be discussing a new round.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>She said the Government Accountability Office pegged the cost of the 2005 round at nearly $35 billion \u2014 &#8217;50 percent more than expected&#8217;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The senator said she was feeling more hopeful about defense plans to modify the existing Virginia class subs to carry more cruise missiles&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>She&#8217;s still concerned because the shipyard remains in need of so much modernization work, she said.
